Griffon Hussars

The griffon hussars are the primary aeronautical forces used by the Alliance, armored dwarves mounted on armored griffons. Since the beasts are unreliable and vicious, griffon cubs are raised from birth by their future pilots alone. Formations of griffon riders patrol the roads and borders of the Alliance as a neutral military order than answers to no Clan, though they are technically sworn to the warrior Clans by default. Traditionally hussars are armed with long spears and bows, but in recent times sky companies have been training griffon pilots in the use of special muskets and black powder bombs. Most formations are lightly armored, but in the rare occasions that the Alliance has warred with the other powers of Illiria about one fifth of them adopt heavy armor and shorter flight times. Griffons prefer horses as food, so the Lancaster aeronauts (who mostly use pegasuses) have a particularly brutal history with the hussars.
