Mamluk Sultanate

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture is the primary source of revenue in the Mamluk economy. Agricultural products are the main exports of Mamluk Egypt, Syria and Palestine. Moreover, the major industries of sugar and textile production are also dependent on agricultural products, namely sugar cane and cotton, respectively.

Trade & Transport

Egypt and Syria play a central transit role in international trade. Early into their rule, the Mamluks sought to expand their role in foreign trade, and to this end signed a commercial treaty with Genoa. Under Sultan Barsbay, a state monopoly was established on luxury goods, namely spices, in which the state set prices and collected a percentage of profits.
