The Vesperin Empire

The Vesperin Empire is a nation that inhabits the lush forests, fields, and wetlands of Draydar's eastern half.

History

When Altiris fell, the elves retreated to the Vesper forest and hid amongst the mangroves of Vesper City. When they deemed that everything was clear, they immediately began to visit each of the remaining cities before the G’aarjya desert and claim them in the name of the newly-formed Vesperin Empire. The first empress was Annowyn Vesperin, an elven woman who had an unusually long lifespan, up until she was assassinated at age 439. Her first daughter, Kellwyn, was indicted in this crime and exiled, though her true guilt remains a mystery amongst the population. Thus, the throne went to Annowyn’s second daughter, Yuyowyn.   Under Yuyowyn, tensions began to rise with the newly-formed Kingdom of Guardia nearby, and it was she who declared war on the kingdom. However, she would not be around to see its conclusion, as 89 years later, she succumbed to a mysterious disease, the source of which was never made known. Thus, her only daughter Emeria Vesperin claimed the throne. Emeria's first order of business was to reform the structure of the empire. She had seen too much of noble families mooching off of the government's coffers while providing little of value in return. As such, she abolished the nobility, reserving government affairs and benefits to only those who held office or were in the direct employ of the empire. This caused an exodus of noble families from Vesper City, a move which ironically helped to enrich the empire by bringing noble money and clout to otherwise irrelevant parts of the nation.

Demography and Population

While humans are extremely common all over Eumaea, nearly half of Vesperin's population is of elven descent, though the elven blood is often localized to Vesper City, Linhollow, and Moonsgrove. Gnomes are more common here than anywhere else, though they rarely settle down, and thus there are few places where gnomes gather, with the town of Pipsdale being a rare exception. Following is a rough population breakdown:
  • Human: 42%
  • Elves, Half-Elves: 40%
  • Gnomes: 10%
  • Half-orc: 4%
  • Other: 4%

Territories

The Vesperin Empire controls the territory from the easternmost border of the G'aarjya Desert at the Great Steppe to the coast. Much of Vesperin is covered in forest, and the forests nearer to its southeast coast are much larger and are better considered jungles. The land is also very wet, and many rivers and lakes are common. Hush Lake, which is almost an inland sea, covers much of the southeastern side of the country, and the much smaller Vall Lake flows into the ocean to the north. To the east, the forests give way to plains and light hills. Around Iron Falls, a canyon makes its way through the land into the forests to the south.

Military

The Imperial Military is overseen by the Department of the Military, and consists of three main branches: the Army, Navy, and Mage Force.   The Imperial Army is led by General Tarken Everoak, and is headquartered in Iron Falls. From here, they are able to hold a defensive line against Guardia, while being central enough to respond to different threats around the empire. Additionally, the army's key weapon is their teleportation sigils, an arcane technology they invented that allows them to teleport personnel across the empire instantly.   The Imperial Navy is based out of Norlyn, and also has an important port near Moonsgrove. With these two ports, the navy maintains nautical control over both the northern and southern seas.   The Mage Force is a corps of magic-users that are employed throughout the empire and beyond primarily for intelligence purposes, but combat-traind mages can also be deployed to the front lines to assist the army or navy if necessary.

Foreign Relations

The Vesperin Empire is currently at war with The Kingdom of Guardia.

High education is common in the empire, with notable universities in both Norlyn and Vesper City.
