Vysteus Character in Eulea | World Anvil

Vysteus

God of Death

The Master of Death. Lord of Abaddon. One of the most loathed beings in the pantheon, Vysteus, is responsible for the souls of the damned. Under his watch they all end up in their rightful place with many being claimed by him personally when it suits his whims. As a result he is one of the most powerful demigods alive, especially now his counterpart in Abaddon departed for the Abyss, leaving him to rule over the Daemons alone. He is responsible for the existence of necromancy as such an affront to nature is only possible so long as he allows it. Vysteus’ form is unknown as he always appears cloaked in shadows and never on any plane other than Abaddon unless his patron orders his presence in Hell. However his whispers can be heard across the multiverse looking for a receptive ear to turn into another of his dark followers. Wherever death and undeath are prevalent the influence of Vysteus can be felt.

Personal history

Vysteus was the second Demigod of Haphion and was created for some role that has long since been lost to the aeons. Whatever dark purpose he fulfilled made him into a pariah among his kind, barely tolerated at best and outright attacked at worst. This never bothered the God as such trivial matters as being 'liked' meant little to him and all that mattered was the approval of Haphion and his own personal power. Vysteus cared little for the games and experiments of the Gods, preferring to examine the remains and ruins of past works long since past. In doing so he gained a vast understanding of the lifecycle of all of the Gods' creations and became fascinated by the power that emanated from the now dead worlds. Much of Abaddon would become littered with these planar corpses as Vysteus collected them to build a perfect land of death and decay.   When all the God's came together to create the Inner Planes many were wary of Vysteus' involvement as the dark being had rarely shown interest in the act of creation before. With Haphion he was able to convince the assembly of divines that the only way their world would ever be stable would be to create a cycle of life and death, a miniature but constant cycle of creation and destruction that he volunteered to introduce. Understanding the wisdom in his words, he was allowed to create the life cycle of mortals and other living beings and, much to the surprise of many of the Gods, his work succeeded in stabilising the world. Vysteus was clever though and as the creator of the idea he in turn became the God of Death, superseding whatever old work he had, through which he was able to control a significant source of power and also subvert it in the form of necromantic magic. As a result his influence in the mortal world was absolute as no matter what, death came for all in time.   When the outbreak of the Angelic Civil War came about, Vysteus sided with the rebel Angels in the name of his master, Haphion, and would be one of the most active participants of the war. He was the one who introduced the Angels to the idea of killing their own kind and he who stoked the flames of their hatred by using their deceased comrades as a driving force. Despite the end of hostilities due to Azrael, whom Vysteus would come to hate for her role as the Archangel of Death, he was never forgiven by many of the good aligned entities and is reviled by them and their followers to this day. The God of Death never cared even once no matter how horrific the circumstances for the fleeting concepts of praise and respect meant little to one so absorbed by darkness.   The eventual death of Oros lead to an even greater change in the power structures of the Outer Planes which would heavily favour Vysteus. Not only was death now applicable to the Gods themselves but the events lead to Vysteus taking sole command of the plane of Abaddon and its Daemonic denizens who eagerly served his every whim. On top of that the fear of death invoked by the Slayer lead to even more power for him and he began to secretly support her and undermining the efforts of other Gods to harm her activities. Now considered one of the most powerful Demigods, second only to Eris and Taemis according to some, Vysteus continues to count down to his final project which undoubtedly will have disastrous consequences for the entire multiverse.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Sole ruler of Abaddon   Creator of Death

Intellectual Characteristics

Vysteus is horrifying, brutal and twisted. The great mind of the Demigod is almost entirely focused on death, decay and destruction but does so in a more more refined way than the raw chaos of Oros. His thoughts are almost impossible to know and the only thing that can be certain is that he knows exactly how to cause the greatest harm.

Morality & Philosophy

Everything ends and so it must always be even if we have to call it down ourselves.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

To claim the soul of every last living being and entity in all of creation.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes: Death, Necromancy, Hunting   Dislikes: Weakness, Hope, Futility

Social

Family Ties

The child of Haphion, younger brother of Zemotl and bane of every God's existence. Vysteus has little to do with any of his fellow divines and most of them like to keep it that way.

Speech

His voice echoes through the realm as naught but a whisper. Never louder but always heard no matter the distance.
