The Twins Character in Eulea | World Anvil

The Twins

Ymius & Ilius (a.k.a. The Twins)

Ymius and Ilius. The two of them exist as both a singular entity and as two distinct personalities, opposites yet acting in harmony with each other at all times. The Twins were responsible for the creation of all the other Deities and by extension all that exists through a chain of creation and destruction that has forged the multiverse into its current form. Ymius acts as the creator of the pair, forging reality from nothingness with a mastery of reality that is second to none, whereas Ilius acts as the destroyer who not only removes older works but also encourages the growth and development of existing works through her acts. It is rumoured that only one of the Twins is ever active at any given time and that as one slumbers the other in turn awakens in a process that is mirrored by the seasons and cycles of the multiverse. Despite their opposing roles the two are very fond of each other and enjoying seeing what the other has done in their absence and any affront to one of the two is considered an affront to both of them. While they are by far the most powerful of the Deities they are also the least active and prefer watching the events of the multiverse play over actively manipulating them.

Personal history

The Twins have no defined origin, whether they formed from the chaos of the Maelstrom or created it in the first place is unknown to any save themselves. In the beginning the two of them simply played with the primordial chaos of reality, creating and destroying at will with no particular goal or intent. Eventually the Twins would bore and instead experiment with more and more complex ideas, rapidly forming distinct personalities until they grew into what would be recognised today. As they grew the desire for something more, something unpredictable and new, would grow until they reached the limits of what they could do. Their understanding of reality had grown too complex and nothing they could create seemed to ever surprise them much to their despair. At least not alone.   The idea of creating a new Deity was not new to them, the idea that it would change anything had seemed too implausible to actually follow through, but for whatever reason they created Nemera anyway. At first the Twins were, as they expected, disappointed as their child could only act in the ways they had predicted but Nemera was more closely connected to the Maelstrom and chaos than they were and soon she began to deviate from their expectations in small but notable ways. The Twins were delighted and loved their first daughter immensely and would create her three younger siblings in time. The creation of morality, good and evil, was an entirely new concept to the Twins and they enjoyed watching the differences emerge in their children and the interactions with their new family and even more so with its eventual expansion as the Gods created the Demigods.   The creation of the Angels was an even more revolutionary event for the Twins, who could barely predict half the behaviours of the first non-divine beings. The first three Angels were even personally raised by the two, excited to observe their development first hand, who watched with pride as those became the leaders of the rest of their kind. Excited for the potential of any beings created further down the line, the Twins encouraged the Angels and Gods to create even more new ideas which would eventually culminate in the creation of the Inner Planes and more importantly the birth of the Material Plane and mortal life.   The mortals fascinated the Twins more than any other creation in the multiverse. At last there existed a being whose potential growth was an unknown even to them. These beings would create a narrative they could never conceive of and most of their attention shifted to watching the ever changing flow of mortal lives. This would cause great tensions in heaven for a time resulting in a civil war among the Angels and almost outright conflict between the Gods until the Twins stepped in and stopped any potential family disasters. Eventually they would come to want to intervene in some form with the mortal world, but could not do so directly for fear of the damage their power would cause, and created their own copy of mortal life in the form of the Samsarans to do so.   Today the Twins still exist, contently watching the world as it unfolds before them. At least for now.
