Morwenna Gwynne Character in Eulea | World Anvil

Morwenna Gwynne

High Priestess Morwenna Gwynne (a.k.a. Keeper)

The Favoured Child. The Keeper of the Ways. High Priestess of the Wanderer. Morwenna stands as one of the most influential figures in the world having once been a companion of the legendary Wanderer and one of the few who has not only completed the Fourth Trial but also survived an attempt at the Final Trial. She exemplifies the lessons of the Wanderer and travels the world helping others in her God's absence. Widely respected even by her enemies she is considered one of the few individuals who can act as an intermediary between the nations and is trusted to arbitrate fairly. While her negotiating ability and sense of fairness do make her somewhat combat averse her actual power is considered great enough to be one of the most powerful Immortals in tier four and it is considered a deathwish to incite her rage.

Personal history

Morwenna was born to a low class family from Acrea and little was expected of her given her status and the honour of working in the Imperial capital. Despite this she was born with an innate desire to explore and spent most of her life trying to expand her boundaries despite the attempts of her family and peers to temper her. Eventually her family suggested that she join the Imperial military upon coming of age, an idea she rapidly came around to given her boredom with city life. Military life did not calm her down however and she struggled to operate under the normal chain of command. Despite this she excelled in combat and was soon assigned to special forces units who were given much more leeway in their operations.   As a special forces operative Morwenna would take on a variety of different missions and excelled in each. Her discipline was still noted to be sloppy but as long as she was kept busy her performance more than made up for it and her rise through the ranks was considered exceptional. Upon promotion to Lieutenant she was officially sponsored by a noble family to complete the First Trial and by this point her combat experience allowed her to easily pass and become both an Immortal and a member of the Gwynne family. With the backing of her new family on top of her successes her future as a rising star of the Empire would be guaranteed and yet none of it would matter more than the impact a single person would have on her life.   It was during a hunt in the Lost Continent that Morwenna would almost lose her life when a Divine Beast turned out to be a juvenile with an angry parent. Morwenna ordered her party to retreat while she held the creature at bay and despite all her ability she could not overcome the beast. Had it not been for the intervention of the Wanderer, then only a tier two Immortal, she would have surely perished. Morwenna and the Wanderer would soon form a fast friendship despite the different worlds they lived in and the two often began hunting together and Morwenna learned more and more from the strange being.   Under the tutelege of the Wanderer, Morwenna would improve faster and faster and her ability soon allowed her to complete the Second, Third and eventually Fourth Trial. By this point she had come to the attention of the Emperor himself and was invited to serve in his personal guard and was given a high position in the Immortal Council. In public she was the perfect warrior and an example of the best people could aspire to be but in private she often clashed with not just the other officials but even the Emperor himself. While many questioned why the Emperor tolerated such behaviour, the two actually got along quite well and any attempts to oust her were swiftly rejected.   In the year 3715 the Wanderer would approach Morwenna with a proposal. As tier fours the only remaining challenge in this world was the Final Trial and eventually they would have to face it. She suggested that they face it together, with other allies to help them. The two of them went out and sought everyone they could and informed them of their intent but most were either too afraid or unwilling to face the reaction of the Emperor in the event they actually succeeded. In the end only six of them came together to take the trial but only Morwenna did so with the blessing of the Emperor himself. And so the group would face the Final Trial despite many of them knowing only Morwenna or the Wanderer. Of the group five would return alive and one of them had become a Living God.   Morwenna found herself now torn between her loyalty to the Emperor and her friendship with the Wanderer although for a while she was able to reconcile the two. This ended the day of the Cataclysm when the tensions between the two finally resulted in open conflict. Morwenna never forgave the Emperor for his actions and swore to continue the Wanderer's work with her other companions from that point on. She was a major factor in the success of the Rebellions that occurred in the wake of the Cataclysm, often arriving on the frontlines to help hold against Imperial aggression. Despite this and her anger she never once attacked the Empire and would only act in defence of others which in many ways allowed her to maintain her reputation within the Empire.   When the Slayer arrived Morwenna and her allies ceased all activity in order to focus on hunting down the scourge who they saw as the bigger threat. Despite all her talent and ability to disrupt the Slayer's plans they were never able to confront her before the events at Oshen and the eventual peace accords. As a result of this and the end of the conflict she decided to settle in the Republic which she felt was the closest to the world the Wanderer had wanted to see. While her wanderlust would always see her out travelling the world she would always return to the nation where she established a reputation as a kind and powerful being always eager to hear and tell stories. The one story she will never tell though is the one which explains what happened to the Wanderer and where she is now, knowledge only she and her fellows know the answer to.
