Annzig

Of Dwarves and Men

Pressed against the Sudetens, at the source of the Weichsel river, Annzig was founded by Dwarven prisons following the defeat of Prussen Darkoak. It was not long after this that human settlement of Annzig began under the newly formed Heavenly Empire, and from here, the city grew into a massive trade hub, exporting ores and metals from it's position near the Dithmarian border. The stury city, with it's Dwarven design is not the most beatiful city, but for those traders who see the looks of gold over a cityscape, the city is rich in openings.
Henry Norwick, Travellers Guide to Evantian, Press of Wien, Wien, 1705.

Demographics

While still having a strong merchant class, Annzig is mostly built up of lower classes, and very few nobles take up the city as their home. While mostly Dithmarian, the city is roughly evenly split between humans and dwarfs, both taking up jobs together in the mining, smelting, refining and exporting of metalwork items.

Government

The city is lead by the Constant of Annzig, who is both the head of the city and wider region of the Princedom. All city officials are elected from the established merchants of the city, most of which are long standing families of both Dwarfs and Humans in the city. All functions of Government are administered by these people, from tax to policy.

Defences

Being built by Dwarfs, Annzig has a strong set of stone walls ringing the more central area of the city, with impressive gatehouses and towers dotted along it, the cliffs also feature defenses built into the rock.

Industry & Trade

Annzig is a mining city through and through, with many ores mined from the region and even in the city, being worked and exported out from the city. To this end, the city does rely on food imports from other regions, but has ample mineral riches to make up for this reliance.

Infrastructure

The wide and deep nature of the Weichsel river allows the inland city to have a small but effective naval base, with docks and military use. The roads are simple, but the Dwarven craft has allowed the city to keep a standard of construction, along with many bridges spanning the Weichsel. Towards the south and east many mines and Dwarven homes dig into the cliffs, while the city uses watermills from the river's tributary streams to power it's workshops.

Assets

Being a mine and smithing town, the city has large stores of weapons and coin smithed in the city. Gemstones and associated items are also common, as are found when digging mines. To this end, Annzig has one of the more professional regional forces of Dithmarburg.

Guilds and Factions

Mining and smithing guilds are very influential in the city, in no small part to their profession being the main commodity of the city. Trader guilds have a presence in the city, but this is weaker than in other cities. The merchants of the city who can be elected are respectable, but cut-throat.

Architecture

The city is a quintessential Dwarven city meets stone Human city, leading to a wide array of designs from both species, however the constant is that everything is made of stone, mostly what was dug out from the region nearby.

Geography

The city is a mixture of flat lands near the more modern dock end of the city, and cliffs and sloped land in the older mine section. This in the end makes the city basically a mix of flatlands and hills against the mountains.

Natural Resources

The mines of Annzig provide some of the most plentiful sources of ores in all of Evantian, many ores are found thanks to both the region itself and Dwarven skills, combined with the water from the Weichsel giving the city much natural bounty.
