Character Backgrounds

Backgrounds

These give you a basic framework for your place in the world. They are not meant to serve as your backstory, but rather a template for where your backstory begins and/ or ends. Feel free to add or remove from them as much as you'd like. Just make sure your DM is okay with what you chose to do.  

Ashola

 

The Crow

At a young age, you were abducted. The Crow, an infamous organization of assassins, saw something in you, but at the risk of your life, you were still forced to prove your worth. You’ve been trained in the arts of espionage, deception, infiltration, and murder. For years they’ve kept you secluded for your training but now you’re out in the world, on a mission for the shadowy organization or on the run from their views and methods.  

House Tebega

They make themselves responsible for the cleaning and protection of the world around them. They have sacred rules for how nature and people should be treated. Now you’ve left to meet and experience the people and nature of the world. In order to make the world a better place, you have to understand all of its differences first.  

House Begat

The Begat believe that the shape of your soul is a reflection of the health of your body and that it is possible to achieve true ascension exiting the cycle of reincarnation, but In order to do this, the body must be trained to the peak of its capability. For this reason, you adventure. What better way to train the body than physically taking on what the world throws your way.  

House Vespa

The Vespa believe that entering an influenced state allows them to see both the earth and more importantly people in their truest form. Perhaps you got tired of being a druggy or you believe you were called to action during one of these influenced states.  

House Sebalo

With the guarantee of future lives to live, The Sebalo feel completely unhindered by life and as a result are excited to try anything once. I guess this is the life you finally decide to experience a life of adventure.  

House Denga

Fascinated by magic and runes the Denga dedicate their lives to understanding it better. They aren’t all experts, but regardless it has become an integral part of their lives. Now you seek to put that knowledge of magic to the test against the world, or maybe you want to learn how it is us  

House Neberto

The Neberto also believe in love and respect for nature, but often times seem to value nature over their fellow man. Each clan member has a pet of their own which is said to be a reflection of their soul. Perhaps you also adventure to understand the nature of other parts of the world or perhaps your animal companion is the adventurous one and you simply follow its lead.  

House Iba

Where the Begat believes in training the body, The Iba believe you should train the mind. They strive for prestige and command respect. You’ve weighed the pros and cons and decided that adventuring is an effective way to accomplish these goals, or maybe you weren’t getting the respect you felt you were owed before so now you travel searching for it elsewhere.  

The Kolvat Empire

 

Nobility

You come from money and have had the best of everything, education, physical training, food, etc. But, being a noble requires a fair bit of diplomacy and you don’t want to spend your life discussing politics for a living. So, now you adventure.  

Runic Warrior

You masterfully blend intense physical combat and powerful magic. Perhaps you use your skills for sport, pitting them against the skills of other Runic Warriors for the entertainment of the public, or perhaps you work to protect the glory of the Empire itself, or perhaps you’re driven by your own religious Zeal for Kelevar himself and now you adventure as a means to demonstrate Kelevar or the Emperor's might, or because you’ve gotten tired of fighting only for sport and want to apply your skills to a real struggle.  

Commoner

As a commoner of the Kolvat, you have a natural distrust for technology. You’ve been physically trained in melee combat, and you are familiar with magic. You’ve been taught the religious teachings of Kelevar, supporting the Elvan idea of superiority, and you have a love for your Monarch.

Military

Trained in ballistics and handling high-stress situations, putting your life on the line is not an unfamiliar concept. However, your conscription is now over. Maybe you chose to leave the army but disgusted by the shape of the world you got your hands on another gun and set forth to fix it on your own, or maybe you do still serve the military, and there are some things you need to do for the sake of your country, maybe you’re a deserter and staying on the move is the only way to keep yourself safe.  

Commoner

Naturally distrusting of others, you value sleek design and functionality. You’ve seen lavish life of those at the top and the squalor and poverty of those on the bottom. You’ve seen the worst and best of humanity, and your government has a shady history. Perhaps you haven’t served your mandatory military conscription yet, but you’ll have to.

Politician

Fighting to keep your party on top is hard work. It makes you old fast, and sometimes a bit desperate. You may have sullied your name in the public image and now adventure to clean it, perhaps this is part of your campaign to appear as a hero of all people, or perhaps you’ve simply grown tired of the politics.  

Military

You’ve got a keen eye, a quick draw, and you’re quite handy. Danger doesn’t disturb you. Every battle you fight is for the might and honor of your people. You adventure as a hobby of sorts giving you something to do to keep your mind and body sharp. This is basically a vacation for you.  

Commoner

You value hard work and functionality over undeserved good times and style. You likely have a strong political opinion but still, have a strong sense of nationalism and pride for your country.

Navy

You’ve been hardened by your time at sea and just like the common sailor being out there really does instill a sense of exploration. You’re bored by the restriction of land, or you were until you found adventuring could scratch that itch for action and exploration.  

Commoner

You’ve lived life near the sea. You come from a people that are warm and welcoming. They value good time and good food. But, they don’t mind being called to action.

Dragon Tamer

You fight alongside the chosen warriors themselves. You are highly trained in combat and all though you’re not superhuman you have skills that could rival that of the greatest soldiers, plus it doesn’t hurt to have a dragon fighting by your side. As a Tamer, you are incentivized to travel the world get to know and understand its people. But, as dragons are a creature that typically instill fear, yours often doesn’t travel with you.  

Commoner of Gearefely

You live your life high above the clouds along the perilous mountaintop that your people call home. You can survive with minimal air, you have +1 turns before you would naturally suffer suffocation damage, and your body has become naturally more resistant to falls. 1d6 Damage Resistance against fall damage.  

Commoner of Berkona

You’ve lived your life amongst animals and wildlife many of which have a tendency to be poisonous. As a result, you have a +1 to Nature Knowledge when Handling Animals and a +1 to Physical Res when poisoned.  

Commoner of Garrana

In a crater of volcanic activity is where you call home. The heat’s never bothered you and neither do the toxic gas plumes. +1d6 Damage Resistance against fire damage. +1 physical resistance against gas-based attacks.  

Commoner of Nensokyll

You’ve lived all your life in the darkness among an incredibly elaborate cave network. You have complete dark vision.  

Commoner of Solin

You handle the extremes of the desert just fine. You draw extra nutrients from food (+2 any health gained from rations)  

Non-Region Specific Bakgrounds

 

Acolyte

You come from a life of religious tradition and beliefs. Perhaps you’ve ventured out to spread the word of your religion or to renounce your faith. Regardless, the teachings of your god(s) have shaped your life. +2 cultural knowledge about information pertaining to your religion.  

Black Market Gang

Maybe you’re a master of finding and selling things you shouldn’t or you’re good at selling lies to people stupid enough to buy. Either way, you report to a big boss who expects a cut of what you get and you’ve gotten into firefights over control of the product you sell. But, recently you’ve considered a life of adventure, maybe it’s to collect a big score for the boss, you want redemption, or you’re just tired of sharing your cut.  

Performer

Dancer, Actor, musician, or some combination of the three, you are used to traveling and performing in front of crowds. But, perhaps the money has begun to dry, the sun has set on your fame, or you’ve simply found a better use for your skills, regardless, it’s time to put the performing life behind.  

Barkeep

Coming up you ran or worked in a bar. You’ve seen people of all walks of life and you know how to talk to them all. The only thing you know better than people is how to handle your liquor. +2 to Physical res rolls involving alcohol. +1 to your selected skill when used against a drunk individual.  

Street Urchin

You survive by picking the pockets of those around you and scavenging for scraps where you can. The reason you adventure? It’s simple. For survival. +1 Sleight of Hand when Pick-pocketing.  

Farmer

You’ve grown to become a master of working the land, through optimal conditions as well as rough times. Perhaps your farmland was recently invaded, the family tying you to the land has died, or you’ve grown tired of the monotony. Regardless, you’ve turned to adventure.  

Hunter

You stalk and hunt exotic prey. Proving the might of human cunning over claws and raw strength. The skills you’ve learned as a hunter serve you well as an adventurer.  

Sailor

The sea called to you and you responded. You know how to subsist off the ocean’s riches alone and are used to not seeing land for days at a time. The freedom of the sea is a frontier that naturally lends itself to exploration. So, you’ve always had an adventurous spirit.  

Scholar

You love knowledge, and you chase it religiously. You’ve learned of so many interesting places and phenomena during your years spend inside reading. But, you’ve grown tired of only hearing about these things. You want to experience everything you learned about on your own. So, adventure was a great natural progression.  

Merchant

Buying and selling are really all you know, but it’s a powerful skill set. You expect to receive the best price for goods you come across. When it comes to finding decent armor and weapons for adventuring you’re definitely the right friend to have.  

Nomad

Traveling far and wide, you picked up basic tactics for surviving on the road and in unknown lands, getting by with few supplies and even fewer comforts. As an adventurer, you travel still, often into even more dangerous places.
