Fey Crossings
Fey crossings are places of mystery and beauty on the Material Plane that have a near-perfect mirror in the Feywild, creating a portal where the two planes touch. A traveller passes through a fey crossing by entering a clearing, wading into a pool, stepping into a circle of mushrooms, or crawling under the trunk of a tree. To the traveller, it seems like he or she has simply walked into the Feywild with a step. To an observer, the traveller is there one moment and gone the next.
Like other portals between planes, most fey crossings open infrequently. A crossing might open only during a full moon, on the dawn of a particular day, or for someone carrying a certain type of item. A fey crossing can be closed permanently if the land on either side is dramatically altered — for example, if a castle is built over the clearing on the Material Plane.
In both the Material Plane and the Feywild there are subtle clues to the locations of these crossings which, while near impossible to spot by the untrained eye, are obvious once you know where to look. To the Eladrin who call the Feywild their home they are trained as children to identify these crossings. Water is most susceptible to the magics that bind the two planes and looking with a perceptive eye into the water can reveal the other plane when you are close to a crossing. A droplet of water sat on a branch which reflects unfamiliar trees, or the reflection of the forest in a still pool of water where the movement of the branches in the wind does not match.
Crossings into the Feywild can be found across Eternium and a traveller could enter the Feywild through one portal only to emerge hundreds of miles away from another portal, if they managed to make the journey unharmed. While the inhabitants of the Feywild are generally peaceful they are typically unwelcoming to lost travellers. Satyrs, pixies, and sprites are known to send travellers around in circles for days, often seeming helpful, appearing to offer help and guidance when in fact they are leading them to a thicket of twig blights where they will be dragged into the undergrowth, entangled in a web of thick roots and consumed by the land. While the land of Eternium of mostly peaceful, the chaos of nature’s will rules here and the circle of life must go on.
