The Great Archiving
To the The Väel'Nyir, the Great Archiving is a time of great joy, celebration of learning, and a time to see friends and family. It's a time to share knowledge, exchange books and research, compare notes and form bonds of study to last another quarter of a century.
The Great Archiving happens once every 25 years, with that entire 25th year reserved for set up in anticipation of the revelery. The city itself lights in response to the festivities, the very air becoming alive with resonant joy. There are few places quite as bright and winsome as Atheris during this time.
Halls of actors and preformers entertain with plays of old and new, works written for the last 24 years now see the light of day. Hallowed orrators monolouge and excite, and silent actors recreate living scenes from history.
An entire island becomes dedicated towards the display of inovation, magic and technology coming to life before your very eyes. Chefs reward hungry travelers with street foods, devine and hellish in their origins, but every one popping with flavors undescript.
And all these are recorded by young scribes, documenting history as it unfolds. All to be stored in the Grand Archive, all kept for study by future generations. Almost nothing here goes unrecorded during the Great Archiving. Almost nothing, except that when everyone is distracted, there's no one left to watch those histories which should not be disturbed.
History
The Great Archiving began somewhere during the time of the Proto-Human expansion and Establishment Era. The Atherium, and Atheris in particular, began to take note of their lower levels, as their racket could no longer be ignored. It started out as merely observastion and recording, keeping out of the affairs of newly forming civilizastions. But over time, observastion turned to experimentation, learning from interactions instead of simply watching. Groups and researchers would be gone for decades at a time, returning with a grand flurioush to signfy their return. It became something frequent and still unexpected, that the High Council found it best to make it a celebratory event, drawing in all of them at once and having a revalatory festival.
