Kajusuzû Settlement in Estia | World Anvil

Kajusuzû

History & Origins

Kajusuzû is the capitol city of Isteria, and the first one founded by the Kajuzurie. It's located on the north-eastern side of the island, and is the primary port of trade between Isteria and the mainland.
The first city of the free, you will never find harder working people who always have something to celebrate.

Districts

Inner Harbor

The main hub of the shipping industry and the heart of the city, and often the central point of activity especially later at night. The many inns and taverns that host sailors from across Estia is always a lively experience along the docks. A small dockside fish market is a common place to see locals, while other parts of the district boast warehouses, shipmasters, fisherman, cartographers and other sea-related tradesmen.

High Gate

If the Inner Harbor is the heart of the city, then High Gate is the brain. The strategically placed district combines both military and government functions. The capitol and national administration happens in this district, alongside military training grounds and dockside import and export controls. While not the largest district, it is one of the most effective and well-maintained districts in the city.

Ringing Quarter

While some thing the ringing quarter gets its name from blacksmith hammers or merchant bells, the real reason is the wind chimes in every window. The sea winds blow, entire blocks of windchimes sing in chorus sometimes loud enough to silence the busy markets along the street. This district makes up the bulk of city, with merchants, tradesmen, markets and business making up the first floor of most of the districts buildings. Successful business folk rent apartments above the many shops and stores and even in the wall of the city.

Kinsquare

Kinsquare is primarily a residential area. Large buildings filled with kitchens and dormitories are owned and run by various chromatic clans, housing the bulk of their membership. While it is not unusual for small business to be run out of these buildings, it's not encouraged either so the during the day the district remains mostly empty save for children and brood mothers.

Stonewell

The northern road out of the city leads to a handful of quarries where many of the stones that make up the walls and city architecture have come from. The northern road is known as stonewell, and that's where this outer-city district gets its name. The district is primarily made up of warehouses that store construction materials, and nobody lives in the district or sticks around after dark.

Scalefair

Dinosaurs larger than horses are not permitted within the city, and so Scalefair primarily serves as stables and training grounds for tamed wildlife. Over time research stations, and various enclosures were created to contain and study larger species of the local wildlife. This drew tourists to the city as well, thus leading the district to be named Scalefair.

Defenses

Kajusuzû's physical threats come from two primary sources: pirates and dinosaurs. To deal with the seaborn-threats Kajusuzu maintains a small military fleet in defence of the city, as well as a battery of strategically placed sea-ward facing cannons. Against land-based threats, massive walls separate the city from the mountainous jungles. While this doesn't perfectly defend against every species, soldiers on the wall are able to dispatch particularly aggressive or deadly dinosaurs if they attempt to approach or scale the walls.

Kajusuzu also maintains strong counterintelligence to thwart smugglers and poachers who wish to steal wildlife from the island. Because of Isteria's strict ban on the exportation of the dinosaur species to the mainland, dinosaur eggs and babies fetch a handsome price to wealthy buyers.
