Captain Isabella "The Siren" Blackthorn Character in Estia | World Anvil

Captain Isabella "The Siren" Blackthorn

Background

Isabella wasn't born into a hard life, the daughter of a merchant in a bustling port city, but it was a life of confilct from early on. She had a self-described call to the sea, and an insatiable desire to explore and see the world. She had no intereste in her family's expectations for her to marry and bring a beneficial business partnership through that marriage.

This conflict finally came to a head when Isabella was 17 and facing an arranged marriage with a man more than twice her age. Rather than continue fruitless protests to her parents, she ran and used her own dowry to buy passage on a merchant ship. She however, never made it to her destination. During the voyage, the merchant ship was attacked, and eventually subdued and boarded by a ruthless pirating gang under the captain Fraser Blakthorn. The merchant ship ultimately sailed on but she was looted of all her values, and Isabella along with two other passengers were taken as slaves.

Isabella's beauty attracted quite a lot of attention, but in a sailor's first attempt to take her to bed she ended up slitting his throat. Captain Fraser Blackthorn was so impressed by the girl's pluck that he took her under his wing, and dubbed her "Little Siren". As time went on Isabella learned the ropes of sailing and the codes of pirating until she earned a spot as first mate under Captain Blackthorn himself.

There are many conflicting accounts about how Isabella became captain of the crew, but in honor of the late captain she took his name, becoming Isabella Blackthorn. However her reputation cemented the nickname she'd been given as a slave, and so most simply know her as The Siren.
