Byokrinrin Species in Estia | World Anvil

Byokrinrin

In most horror stories, you hear of glowing red eyes looking at you from a place of indeterminite evil. In the Tundra however, the eyes that send children under their furs and keep women tucked into the warmth of their hearths at night do not have red eyes, but blue. The sighting of the glowing blue eyes of a Byokrinrin or a 'ghostly cat', is so terrifying that many simply choose not to look outside at night if they can help it. Byokrinrin sightings while extraordinarily rare, bring with them great misfortune and some would even say certain doom.

The Superstition

It is believed that Byokrinrin are not actually of Estia or Koljorn, and that they walk the border between this plane and another. Different stories fail to agree on which plane is on the other side, but what they do keep in common is that seeing a Byokrinrin signals that the fabric between them is thin in that place. The most detailed account, describes the Byokrinrin as a pale blue light from a distance, and upon gettling closer a bright white cat the size of a dog with glowing blue eyes appears to translucently ripple as it moves. The writer described being unnerved by it's lack of skittishness, but it did not display any aggression either, only stared at him in pity.

While only a handful of sightings have ever been recorded, the Byokrinrin often takes the blame for misfortune befalling a person or village. So much so that in some villages, failing to report the sighting of a Byokrinrin is considered punishable by death.

Modern Beliefs

Modern researchers and explorers believe the Byokrinrin to be a real species of large cat that live in the Tundra and suggest it may have a magical nature although they do not believe they jump planes. There are no known modern sightings however.
