Anscoul Illimyra Character in Estia | World Anvil

Anscoul Illimyra

Anscoul was son Mollien Illimyra, grandon of Aeron Illimyra, and while is father lived was an eventual heir to the throne.

King Aeron however, had an unnaturally long life, even for an Elf. When his eldest son Mollien Illimyra died of withering in 1980, the laws of Estia dictated that the throne should pass through Aeron's second son, Canthor. Being unseated is what led to Anscoul to start the bloodiest Estian war to date.

In 1982 AoK, Anscoul ascended to the throne of Estia, and from the time he took the throne he was bombarded with one challenge after another. The war left Estia reeling economically, an issue that was then compounded by drought and blights leading to starvation and unrest. Rumors of a still living descendant of Canthor with a challenge to the throne, and plots against the hated king made Anscoul extremely paranoid and suspicious of everyone outside his descendant family.   The constant turmoil led many to believe Anscoul's reign was cursed. The constant problems and rumors of his curse and impending death made Anscoul decisions became primarily self-preservation. He isolated himself within the citadel, and then spread rumors that he wasn't actually in the city to throw off would-be assassins. After only 12 years, Anscoul succumbed to a wound he received in the war for the throne. The nature of the wound has been widely speculated by historians, however many also note that Anscoul's wife had passed away just months prior and may have contributed to his death. In his final days, Anscoul decreed that not one but each of his ten sons would ascend the throne in equality so that no one could end his line of succession so easily.
