Hallis Material in Essaria | World Anvil

Hallis

Hallis is a plant native to the Talc Desert. It is known for its spines, which can be turned into hallis dust, a powerful stimulant.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The plant is a yellow-brown cactus that grows in low sandy areas. Spherical in shape and low to the ground, hallis has short, thick spines that range in color from a dull red to bright crimson. Its body is hollow and filled with water that is gathered by its roots during the intermittent rainstorms that occur in the Talc Desert.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The spines of hallis can be processed into hallis dust, which is used as a powerful stimulant. Only legal in Barisea and Hiladhel, hallis dust allows intense focus for a time, but in high doses can lead to extreme overstimulation.

Geology & Geography

Hallis only grows in the semi-magical sands of the Talc Desert. Attempts at growing it elsewhere have been met with little success.

History & Usage

History

The hallis plant evolved quickly after the eruption of Srolgistnir in 913 BE and the creation of the Talc Desert. First records of its existence date to 750 BE, categorized by Barisean naturalists, and its first refinement into hallis dust was documented shortly after in 735 BE.

Refinement

The spines of the hallis plant can be refined into a potent stimulant known as hallis dust. The spines are dried out in the sun for a week. Afterwards, the dried spines are mixed with the semi-magical sand of the Talc Desert and ground to a fine particulate. When mixed with boiling water, the hallis dust can be consumed.
