Wild Silverthorn Species in Espen | World Anvil

Wild Silverthorn

Botanist Findings:

A dangerous plant that is most prominent around veins of metallic ore. The vines have been known to grow up to 380 feet long. Beloved by miners the world over for being an indicator of ore veins the vines are considered a sign of good luck in Dwarvish culture. Though they are a sign of good luck they are not without their dangers. The barbs that protrude from the vines are known to eat through any metallic armor and most weapons, for this reason, they are avoided by everyone except for the most skilled miners.  Usually only harvested by members of The Metallurgist Institute the pheromones secreted by the plant can have a disorienting effect on anyone in the surroundings causing them to see double, lose equilibrium, or in case of long term exposure (3 days) cause blackouts and loss of memory.

Horticultural Findings:

The spell known colloquially as "silvery barbs" takes its name from this plant,  as the spell can cause similar effects in a target. Though there have been many attempts to domesticate the plant all have been ineffective as raw silver ore is required as well as a very specific pH level of soil which is difficult to maintain artificially. Though the plant is dangerous, for those brave enough to harvest it the market is surprisingly rewarding.

Herbology:

The vines when harvested secrete a thick viscous fluid, that is incombustible. When dried in large quantities this fluid becomes very valuable for town guards responsible for stopping the spread of fire inside cities.
