Cathedral at Cliffhold

History & Lore

2483 feet above sea level sets the Cathedral at Cliffhold. Surrounded on north, east, and west by nearly impassible jagged cliffs and sheer rocks, the Cathedral has only one narrow path that winds through the surrounding mountainous terrain. The path, known as Thrasdrok Pass is little more than 3 feet wide in some areas making ascending with animals or carts nearly impossible.   There is also the wind to contend with. As one gets closer to the summit, the speed of gusts picks up exponentially leading to the Dwarvish idiom "...as useful as a windy day to the God of Land." A small molten altar sits at the base of Mt. Cliffohold, for those who cannot safely make the pilgrimage to the top. Each year the use of that altar becomes more of a mainstay as individuals who attempt to reach the summit and fail tend to make the front pages of the Kobold Press.

The Apostle Queen

Unlike the humans with their High Table of priests drawing consensus and Elves with their Elder Tribunals, the flow of power is far more clearly identified in Dwarven Lands.  Each of the large Dwarven Cities is presided over by an Apostle King with absolute authority within his city and the surrounding villages. The Apostle Queen, Dondaba Lightbrand, is one of the more beloved Apostles Royalty. This may be because she singlehandedly did away with the title being an inherited role. Nearly 180 years ago when she was just a devout vulcanite missionary, she began speaking on rather progressive ideas and gained somewhat of a cult following that overthrew the previous Apostle King, Fodum Drakeforge who was known for falling well short of his vows as Apostle King.
