Aretro Emptor

History & Lore

Born from an old goblin tradition known as Debtor's Day in which debts could be settled through trade and bartering, the holiday shifted once Goblins eliminated the practice of Debtor's Prisons. However, the day is an excellent time to settle any outstanding fees with Goblins or their businesses. While there are no official events or formal practices related to the holiday, many taverns and ale halls act as unofficial gathering places. This of course only exacerbates both trading and poor decision-making.   Unlike most traditions which are annual, this tradition is bi-annual and occurs near the winter and summer (which, not coincidentally aligns with the beginning of the fiscal year and its halfway point).   One particularly auspicious Aretro Emptor a clever young goblin girl of only 16 years of age successfully bartered her way from an old leather belt (estimated value of 1 bronze) to a small galleon (estimated value of 3,316 gold). Aretro Srioz became both famed for her trading prowess and renowned for her sailing ability, she became something of a patron saint of bartering. Her ship, now dubbed Bronzeworth is known for making port at either Nattan Mal or Hatchetwinks for the bi-annual tradition. Now a legend in her own right, she has captivated the imaginations of not only goblins but Humans, Tabaxi, and even Dwarves who now celebrate the holiday.

Cultural Relevance

As the tradition has become more widely known a number of goblins have made somewhat of a spectacle of their experience on the day attempting to recreate Aretro's masterful feat. Their exploits usually find their way into the Kobold Dispatch in the Arts & Culture section. Though they have yet to recreate the feat they have ended the day with (in order of value):
  1. Robes of an Ashen Elder (Unworn) [Est. Value 719 GP]
  2. Quill of Trizick-Stackhouse (Unverified) [Est. Value 496 GP]
  3. Crown of Sazarack (Unadorned) [Est. Value 382 GP]

Observances:

Occurring twice a year on the last day of Primrose (15) and the last day of Shenzen (105)
