Catrano

Pearl of Tyriol

The second largest city in Tyriol and capital of the largest state in the Tyrian Confederacy, Catrano has long been at the centre of world affairs. It dominates trade throughout much of the Cinder Sea and beyond. In many ways, Catrano is a microcosm of Tyrioln and Eadra as a whole- it has seen civilisations and cultures rise and fall, each leaving a permanent trace on the city's art and architecture.

Defences

The Cliff District is encircled by an ancient stone wall dating back to the days of the Reman Imperium. This wall, known as the Murus Tacitus, has been reinforced over the centuries since. The Mercato, Harbour and Fuorigrotta Districts are enclosed by a more recent wall

Infrastructure

Arsenale di Catrano

The Arsenale di Catrano is one of the largest naval shipyards in Eadra, rivaled only by the great dockyards of Vedria and Highmere. It is here that the Catranese Navy is based and exerts its influence across the entire Western Reach.

Great Moat

The Great Moat encircles the entire city. Constructed by the dwarves of Karal Shardak in 798 as an extra line of defense against attack following the Sack of Catrano, the Great Moat is wide and deep enough to fit smaller oceangoing vessels within, further increasing both its defensive capabilities and the capacity of Catrano's docks.

History

Prehistory

Archaeological evidence has shown that the lands surrounding Catrano have been continuously inhabited by primitive human tribes since before the emergence of the elves. According to an ancient legend the Bay of Cinders was once a colossal volcano where an earth titan named Terrahex did battle with Tiamat during the final centuries of the endless Giant-Dragon War. No archaeological evidence backs up this myth, however the area has been known to be volcanically active since the days of the Reman Imperium.

Age of Arcana

Around this time the elves first settled in nearby Arbelorn Forest, which once covered most of modern-day Tyriol. According surviving map fragments, the capital of the Kingdom of Tir-Arbelorn, Dinasthân, was located in the area of Catrano.
