A Serpentfolk ritual goes horribly wrong, shattering the continent and wiping out the Serpentfolk along with nearly all reptiles on the landmass.
The Serpentfolk execute a ritual designed to propel them into complete domination of the world, and it backfires spectacularly. The continent is shattered, and the serpentfolk are wiped out entirely by the magical backlash. The backlash is so strong that the sympathetic magic in it also destroys all reptiles on the continent and even forces the dragons into hibernation for a millenium.
