Torvedr - The Stormbringer
An ancient, primeval god, Torvedr is an embodiment of the raw power and destructive nature of the storms which batter coastlines, sink ships, and remind mortals how small they truly are in the face of the elements. Its original name lost to history, Torvedr is the name given to it by the residents of The Stormwracked Isles who discovered ancient standing stones and carved reliefs dedicated to the primeval god and adopted it as their own. A harsh and unforgiving god, Torvedr cares little for its worshippers, only caring that fear and respect for the storm is spread.
History
As a primeval god, the origins of the being known to its modern worshippers as Torvedr are lost to the depths of history. Rediscovered when the residents of The Stormwracked Isles found ancient sets of standing stones and bas reliefs dedicated to the storm god, they named it Torvedr and began worshipping it for perhaps the first time in millenia. Today, Torvedr is the primary god of The Stormborn, worshipped across The Stormwracked Isles and the Stormborn raiders and reavers spread fear of the storm across the north of The Shattered Continent.
Worship
While Torvedr may have gone unworshipped for millenia before being rediscovered by the Stormborn, the carvings and bas reliefs at the sets of standing stones that they found left little doubt as to the nature of their new god or his preferred methods of worship. The most important act that a worshipper of The Stormbringer can do is to spread fear of the storm among non-believers, and The Stormborn do this by braving the fury of the storm in order to raid foreign shores. When not raiding, Storms are times to shelter behind strong walls and gather in worship, reflecting on the power of the stormbringer and the vulnerability of man against his creations.
Clergy
As a primeval god embodying a force of nature, druids are as common as clerics among Torvedr's clergy. The druids tend to focus more on the nature side of things while the clerics focus more on the human side, but both are regarded as equals when it comes to leading religious ceremonies and representing their god.
Facing The Storm
Trial by exposure is a common event among the stormborn, either in a more limited form as a rite of wariorhood, as a form of trial for accused criminals, or as a form of execution. As a rite of wariorhood, aspiring warriors must stand stripped to their smallclothes during a major storm for several hours to prove their mettle and gain an appreciation for the power of their god. Accused criminals can request a trial by storm in which they must survive being exposed to the elements during major storm while tied naked to a stone pillar, the duration of the trial varying by the severity of their crimes. Individuals whose crimes are severe enough to warrant execution are sometimes sentenced to death by exposure, being tied up exposed to the elements until they expire.
