Gills, The Crew Scientist
Doctor Gills Chandrasekhar
Dr. Gills Chandrasekar is a chemist, multi-specialist medical practitioner, expert on biotechnology, and the only non-Chimpkind scientist to escape Somapex alive.
Despite his numerous accomplishments, Gills is highly wanted by the Universal Government for escaping with information on the Government Scientific Organization "Somapex", as well as committing treason by joining a rebellion crew in their mission to help liberate people across the galaxy from the Chimpkind. Only recently becoming fully independent from the grip of Somapex after being kidnapped in infancy and raised as a student, Gills is new to forming bonds with other people-- but regards the other crew members as almost family.
As the crew scientist, his closest relationship is with the crew engineer and his lab partner Sparkplug, who eventually becomes his husband.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Gills is a tall, heavy but physically apt Ambymander, skilled in fighting close-combat if need be. Despite this, he has multiple health issues, including epilepsy, which potentially endangers him in certain activities. Because of his damaged nerves, he often has chronic pain that may render him partially immobile on some days.
Body Features
Gills' skin tone is a very pale lavender, with warm pink secondary colors, such as the "plates" located on both cheeks, and frills. The palms of his hands are lighter than the rest of his skin, and he has retractable claws as a defense mechanism.
Facial Features
Aside from scarring, Gills' is smooth-faced like all Ambymanders, with strong eyebrows and dark circles under his eyes. His mouth is often described as being crooked, and he has a strong jawline.
Identifying Characteristics
Gills' most prominent identifying features include his physical scarring, including severe burns across the left side of his face, closing one of his eyes. One of the frills on the left side of his face appears to be cut off, and he has a small scar from a cut going across the right side of his mouth. He also wears glasses, despite only having one working eye.
Gills also has burns on each of his wrists and neck, implying where his restraints would've been. Other than these, other numerous scars from multiple encounters line his body, including a series of tally-marks [DATA EXPUNGED]
Physical quirks
He is primarily right handed, and is described as having a poor posture while working, but not when tense. Moves quickly and with purpose, uses a lot of hand gestures to convey an idea- often seen with both arms behind his back. Clicks pens frequently, avoids eye contact.
Apparel & Accessories
His identifying outfit is a black turtleneck, a crisp white lab coat, black square-rimmed glasses, black all-terrain rubber (?) boots, and gray work pants. It's also suggested that under his turtleneck he's wearing a casual black t-shirt.
Specialized Equipment
Gills' signature weapon is his adaptable crossbow, which comes with several different arrow charge-types-- including default, explosive-upon-impact, poison-tipped, rope, and electric. He tends to hold off on using the electric charges, except for special cases.

Personal history
Gills from a young age was abducted from his family and enforced into a Somapex schooling program, isolated from the rest of the world for most of his formative years, training to work in a highly-confidential scientific field developing bio-weapons. After schooling, he was put under the teachings of a "mentor" figure, Dr. Forrester, working for Somapex into his late 20's before discovering the hard way what Forrester had in mind for him. Gills eventually escaped and spent roughly a decade free, travelling the galaxy as a vagrant and learning about the outside world while running from the Universal Government. Eventually, he was re-captured for an unknown amount of time, tortured and mutilated for information as a prisoner. After a raid on the prison, Gills was rescued, half-dead, by a rebel crew run by Foliaverd Captain Cabbage Rose, who recruited him as a scientist and as a source of useful information on Somapex when he was willing to talk.

Education
Gills studied in Somapex's school program until he was roughly 20, pursuing his doctorate at a young age and continuing with a mentorship program. He has a PHD.
Accomplishments & Achievements
While working for Dr. Forrester, Gills was instructed to take on his responsibility of additional paperwork and complicated algorithms, developing blueprints for weapons and supplying chemical equations- all without credit. He also graduated with a PHD, becoming highly adept in the medical field and providing help to people across the galaxy while traveling with the rebel crew.
Failures & Embarrassments
Despite doing most of the work himself, the credit was fully taken by Dr. Forrester, his old mentor and the source of his greatest trauma, who went on to become a highly respected name in the scientific field. Gills largely considers himself a failure for not preventing his fame by speaking out- not that it would've done anything.
He's also gone on to speak out about how he regrets having worked for Somapex and creating such weapons for the Government, despite having no choice.
Mental Trauma
Gills' childhood was largely isolated, but his trauma culminates in later being groomed and physically abused by his mentor (it's implied a certain incident with Dr. Forrester is where Gills got the scar going across the right-side of his mouth, presumably while trying to fight back.) The inability to speak up about his mistreatment at Somapex without risking further humiliation- or violence- led to his escape, going a decade before being re-captured and brutally mutilated and tortured. Gills is characterized by his touch-aversion and often closed-off personality.
Because of incidents involving Forrester harassing him while he slept in his dorm, Gills often finds himself unable to sleep soundly by himself due to nightmares or tactile hallucinations. The taste of alcohol is also highly triggering to his senses.

Gills' closest relationship is with Sparkplug, his lab partner and husband, who he meets while being employed by the rebel crew after rescuing from a Somapex raid on a primarily auto-populated safe haven. They care for each other significantly, helping one another cope with their trauma.
Gills is also fond of the other crew members, considering them family and forming a particularly strong friendship with Captain Cabbage Rose after her employment of him and their similar interest in taking down Somapex. Gills is protective of Venus and Domino, seeing them as younger, more vulnerable targets.
The only crew member Gills shares a distaste for is Nora Acton when she joins the crew, due to her indirectly causing him to be re-traumatized when she turned them in to the government forces. Gills tries to stay away from her as often as possible, but finds it difficult to be angry at her, considering she's so young- and he was once in a position like hers. He often thinks about how she could've easily ended up like him, and finds himself protective of her against all odds. Gills has gone on to state that he doesn't hate Nora- he just thinks it's safer to distance himself from her. Eventually, the two become an odd pair in a sort've father-daughter relationship.

Gills' family is largely unknown due to being torn from them at such a young age, but it is implied they cared for him immensely before his abduction.

Gills was born into a Jewish family, and doesn't remember much about how his family practiced their views, but he remains in some part attached to his faith- he celebrates minor holidays with the rest of the crew, as most of them are Jewish.

Gills is quiet in social situations, unless he finds a good opportunity to offer his logical course of action, advice, or sarcasm. Towards the beginning of the journey, he's often difficult to wrangle into a conversation and regarded as grumpy or closed-off. He becomes far more sated in Sparkplug's presence, often showing a soft side of himself that would be considered rare to anyone else.

Gills' has a deep, but usually quiet voice. He stutters under pressure, tends to over-think before saying things, uses an extended vocabulary, and his voice almost becomes a growl when angry.
Relationships
History
Gills and Sparkplug have been important to each other since the first time they met. Their contrasting personalities, combined with how well they work together in the lab, are a perfect recipe for an unbreakable bond. After Sparkplug was taken to the medical wing on the space station after being incapacitated as a civilian by law enforcement during a mission, Gills built him a prosthetic leg to replace the one that was lost in the accident. Sparkplug commented on the quality of the leg on such short notice, but also mentioned that it was clear they were in need of a real engineer if they were having their doctor do all the work. Gills' interest was immediately piqued by how efficient his work was and how well-knowledged Sparkplug was about engineering. They continued to work together on various projects, designing weapons and gadgets for the crew to use during missions, unaware that they were mutually pining for one another the whole time. Gills put off telling Sparkplug about his feelings due to his aversion to intimacy and fear of getting too close to someone only to be betrayed or rejected- but his feelings overpowered his fear, and eventually the two began dating after a dance together that ended in a kiss. Their relationship was mostly secret- but let's be real it was totally obvious. Well, to everyone except Domino, who is kind've clueless on most things. Right around the beginning of season 2, they consider themselves to be married, and after the finale they're legally bound to one another as well.

Sparkplug calls him "Gillsy" sometimes, and Gills largely refers to him just as Sparks, but other than that it's your generic domestic lovey-dovey nicknames such as honey, dear, darling (or the southern "darlin'"), etc.

Gills and Sparkplug share a common interest in the scientific world, such as inventing and developing new ideas or thesis's. They work together perfectly, thoughts and ideas constantly in sync in the lab. They also enjoy hobbies like reading, music, dancing together, and "field research" aka hiking. They also share many similarities in their respective backgrounds- both homeless for a large period of time, experiencing similar traumas, their whole lives affected by how Chimpkind uprooted them from a young age.

Sparkplug is one of the only people that Gills has confided in about [spoiler] being groomed and assaulted while working for Forrester at Somapex [spoiler], Sparkplug similarly telling him things he has never told anyone before about traumatizing experiences while being homeless.
