Stele of the mages Item in Esarios | World Anvil

Stele of the mages

Appearance

Mages' steles are made of dark, almost black stone and are usually rectangular. The names of mages who have fallen during missions are inscribed on them. They are usually placed in a quiet place within the order of mages so that relatives and friends can mourn in peace.

History and meaning

The first steles were created almost simultaneously with the first order of mage. From the very beginning, they served as a place of remembrance and a part of the history of each mage order can be read on them. If a stele has no room for more names, another stele is placed next to it, as it is forbidden to remove or overwrite a name. This tradition has continued for centuries and has never changed. Only the location of the stelae has changed, as the orders and graveyards have grown in size over time, which is why the orders have built larger buildings at other locations. This made it more difficult to visit the steles, but at the same time they became more important as memorials. After much deliberation, it was decided to place the stelae in a quiet location within the order. This meant that relatives and friends could visit the stele at any time.
