Shuttle

"What's a good loom without a shuttle?" - Commoner's Saying

The Shuttle, the mage's basic tool of trade, exists in myriad forms throughout the cultures of Erythica from the esoteric 'Talon' of the Pyrrhm Steppes to the more commonly seen 'Loom Crooks' in the hands of college sanctioned Threadmages. It allows them to perform feats from minor magical illusion to, in more sinister cases, the summoning of fiends from outside the commoner's ken.   It's basic incarnation is a Seybianite 'claw' attached to a flexible 'tarsus' of Brakite. When in use, the claw is unsheathed from within the tarsus like a feline claw so that it may properly make contact with the magical threads of the world. After use, it may be re-sheathed within the Brakite (to prevent untoward effects while walking, a problem caused by many amateur magi.)

Utility

Used as the basic manipulation tool of magic, it was an accidental discovery by Seybian Brakas. Used for everything from warfare to domestic help, the concurrent minerals can also be gravely misused.

Manufacturing

The mining of this material is overseen by magical foremen who ensure that every chunk mined is properly 'sheathed' in Brakite lined sacks before being taken for selection and refinement at the colleges.

Access & Availability
Commonly accessible to those sanctioned magi within the magical colleges of the world, but quite hard to obtain by anyone outside of this expertise (barring smugglers). The Seybianite trade in particular is closely monitored by a specific panel of guilds and magi to prevent untoward 'accidents' by those wishing to experiment without the use of a magi's third eye.
Complexity
The concurrent minerals of Seybianite and Brakite should be used in concert to prevent magical accidents and disasters.
Discovery
While the basic concept of a tool to manipulate the Matron's Web has existed for centuries, it was only when Seybian Brakas of the Lyrian Imperium discovered Seybianite and Brakite concurrently deep in the sulfuric Lyrian Hinterlands that the concept could be put into practise...or rather, when he dropped the sample of Brakite in his pouch and it cracked open to reveal the Seybianite within.   The resulting disaster aside, Brakas discovered Seybianite's miraculous property to cut, temporarily bond with, and gather the Matron's Web to work 'miracles'. Resulting technomagic research into this phenomena determined that Seybianite was a highly reactive magical catalyst which was rendered inert when encased within Brakite.
