Kenina Kōjin Character in Erylia | World Anvil

Kenina Kōjin

Kenina Kōjin

Pyromaniac. Or just a Maniac in general.   Kenina is a spitfire who comes from a small town and due to certain circumstances decided to go to the guild. She’s trying to find her place in the world and wants get a better grip on her powers. She is young and inexperienced and hopes to prove herself, i.e. she's quite eager to please.   Nina grew up in a small, nameless village in Olsyr. Her mother died in childbirth and her father hasn’t been seen since she died. Her tiefling lineage caused the villagers to be wary of her but after inheriting her phoenix fire abilities, they outright ostracized her. Two scary things wrapped up in a volatile little package. As Nina was still only a child, the villagers weren’t completely heartless and made sure she was able to survive as the village urchin but made it known that she was only barely tolerated. Their “kindness” was shown by a farmer turning a blind eye when Kenina would root around their garden for vegetables or a shopkeep throwing out a set of tattered garments that no one would otherwise want.   She was essentially raised by a grandfatherly figure, an old traveling gnome merchant who settled down to live on the outskirts of the village. He helped keep Kenina on a good path and worked with her through the tough times. The old gnome who took care of Kenina was named Grandpa Gazu and was about 443 years old. He’s been around for a bit and may have a few screws loose. He has a good heart and a great love of storytelling, which Nina was always eager to listen to and absorb.   Nina always possessed a natural confidence and a strong sense of justice that was tempered by her defiance to not give in to those in the village who tormented her. She didn’t have very good control over her firepower and would accidentally unleash it in times of stress or emotional trauma which would further incite the villagers. Being called the bad guy or the villain is a bit of a sore spot for her since she was treated as such for most of her childhood. Grandpa Gazu was a keystone to her well being and for her ability to think positively in any situation. He always said that she was blessed by fire and to not be ashamed or afraid of her power but to embrace it. He used to tell her stories about brave heroes fighting to protect the weak, forging alliances, and conquering their enemies, so Kenina developed her hero complex from that. Nina cherishes the old man and thinks the world of him. Though she is quite independent due to having to fend for herself for most of her childhood, she is also starved for affection and attention. Kenina is quite aware of how cruel people can be, yet still consciously chooses to believe in the best of them and thinks that it is up to the individual to try as hard as they can to find a solution despite adversity.
