Inkellin Ethnicity in Erthos | World Anvil

Inkellin

The nomadic people of The Desert of Ruins. From the beginning of the Age of Mortals they have lived in the desert. Their lives were tough so they decided to leave the desert for the greener and more fertile lands to the south. When they were about to migrate, a spirit came to them and implored them to stay in exchange for magic unknown to any other people.   Every child is marked with branding, that appears like a tattoo, which is a spell. They are able to draw upon the power of the spell at will, although depending on the spell, it can drain them physically and mentally when they do it. Over the course of their life, they can get new spells branded into their skin. All members of the Inkellin tribe have the ability to summon water and also craft walls of sand.   Inkellin warriors often blend their weapon work and their strange form of magic. Those who choose to explore greater magic train tirelessly to master it to make sure that their bodies can handle the strain of the spellcasting.   There are a few tribes that live in the desert, sometimes peacefully, but they do compete over the limited resources of their homeland. While they agreed to stay in the Desert when they made the deal with the Spirit Donnen: The Tempest they want connections to the outside world. So far they have not managed to connect with the outside world; there always seems to be issues that arise among the tribes.   Each Tribe has a Spokesman or woman who travels between the other clans and negotiates with them.

Major organizations

  • The Tribe of Beasts is a Inkellin tribe known for their magic over creatures. Even without magic they are proficient in caring for their animals and raising stellar beasts. They are open to trading because they know that the animals that they have to offer will be highly prized.
  • The Tribe of The Sands is known for their ability to shape the sand they live in; even created permanent tunnels in it. As such they also are the most warlike of the tribes, having a distinct advantage against their enemies. While they are not against trade, they do not see a reason to leave their home.
  • The Tribe of Mirage is the most secretive of the tribes; preferring to have little contact with other tribes or people. They believe that they are safest when they are hidden. Still, they do rely on the other tribes and will meet with them. Still they are open to the other tribes trading with the outside world for some reason.
  • The Tribe of Venturers was once the most prolific of the tribes and traveled throughout the Desert of Ruins. After many bad encounters with the Varishu they now are few in number and are opposed to the elves and the outside world.
  • The Tribe of the Unwavering are a particularly brutal tribe known to never turn down a fight and often find reasons to be slighted by the other clans. They are secretly working with Manu The Skeleton Lord in order to achieve immortality for their people.
