Glowyr - The Gnome District

Glowyr is the Gnome district situated on the Southwest quadrant of Gadael.   The Gnomes were second to arrive on Argoll’s shores in the early 1800s. Drawn to the towering mountains on the peninsula, about 2000 Gnomes eagerly rushed into the then-underestimated forest of Ersterwald with their steam-powered drills, pikes, and guns, ready to begin mining for their great fortunes. Once they evaded the treacherous beasts and unforgiving fauna within, they settled at the foot of the closest mountain of which they named Ziel (meaning objective, target). However, they were quickly met by even nastier, flying beasts and creatures on the edge of their village. These beasts picked off many of the Gnomes, driving them inward to the Heart of Ersterwald where they could more easily defend their village and send out groups of the hardiest Gnomes to mine for precious metals and minerals.   Upon moving inward to the forest, 70 Gnomes left in the aftermath of Ziel established Glowyr. A couple of years afterwards, the Gnomes encountered the Orcs, who were also driven from their village by the encroaching monsters of Ersterwald. The Orcs could hold their own against most of the monsters, but their constructing and planning skills were poor since all of their efforts went into fighting and feeding their larger population. The Gnomes offered to help construct better dwellings for the Orcs under the condition that the Orcs would protect them from the dangerous creatures within the forest. Eventually, the Elves and Humans found the Orcs and Gnomes in the forest and they formed Gadael together on the agreement that they would all share resources and support each other. Once the Elves discovered the magical properties held within the gemstones that a bunch of the Gnomes were stockpiling, they struck a deal that all of the gemstones would be given to the Elves in exchange for magical protection and survival assurance from the other districts. Since Gnomes dislike magic, they were reluctant to accept it, but their dwindling numbers pressured them into the decision to give away their gemstones and most of their metals for the protection and survival of their people.   In the present time, Glowyr’s district is made up of simplistic and minimal, yet artistically-etched and sturdy buildings, meant to capture the beauty and fortitude of the mountains. The Gnomes also have the most watermills of any district - three. The mills are located along the canal dividing Glowyr and the Orc district, Krieger. Since Gnomes are skeptical of magic, they tend to rely on craftsmen and engineers to fix and improve their tools and weaponry, so many of them have set up shop along the main road that leads to the Main hall, where the Gnome council meets. A large gondola station for the steam gondola sits next to the main hall, which is used to travel to and from the other districts and to reach the mining facility on the side of the mountain (Ziel) that borders them to the outside. Their storehouse is located on their side of the canal near the boundary between all of the districts and it is where they do all of their metal, mineral, and gem bartering (see district storehouses for more information on the structure itself).
