Necromancer Profession in Ersetu in the Age of Heroes | World Anvil

Necromancer

Toiling away in workshops, advising kings, providing medical care for those desperate enough to try, necromancers are Magistri versed in Black Magic.

Career

Qualifications

Many necromancers begin by finding a grimoire or by trafficking with a particularly nasty spirit. Most never progress beyond this lowly, self taught status, but every year thirteen of them get an invitation. On the blasted, frozen fields of Kur, through a remote and secret Thousand League Gate, sits a compound known as the Scholomance.

Career Progression

Necromancers describe their progression in terms of how many cultivated curses they have. They typically refer to these as 'mysteries' or 'veils', and they trade samples in their secretive meetings.

Payment & Reimbursement

To fund their research, many necromancers offer curses to sufficiently wealthy or aggrieved customers.   Some necromancers take swathes of land and live a double life as a fiefdom unto themselves while secretly conducting their dark business.

Perception

Purpose

Necromancers can act as assassins, advisers, and even medical providers.

Social Status

At best, necromancers are distrusted and kept at a partial social quarantine. At worst they are openly persecuted and killed when discovered. In most places, their treatment is on the worse side of the spectrum.

Operations

Tools

Necromancers often have belts or bandoliers that hold various granite boxes and prepared spells ready for use. They always have some sort of grimoire or recipe book to track the progress of their curses and cultures. They require some sort of large workshop, though some have managed to keep it small enough to fit in a large wagon.

Materials

Necromancers develop their spells from a base cultivation. These cultivations are proprietary and subtly different for every necromancer, even if they're from the same stock and intended for the same purpose. A necromancer's workshop is a nightmare of bacteria cultures, fungal blooms, wandering slime molds, and bottled plagues.

Provided Services

Necromancers often sell small curses and charms. Some go so far as to act as assassins for hire, making "natural causes" itself a suspicious form of death for anyone sufficiently loathed. In settlements where they are tolerated, they often provide medical care and advise settlement leaders on matters relating to their expertise.

Dangers & Hazards

The practice of necromancy is a sure pathway to Vulgar Corruption.
