Godsbarrow Forest
People often conceive of maps as a clarification of all that is known and all that is unknown. Those areas within the map have been measured, codified and regulated, and those areas beyond the edges of the map are where mystery lies. But those who assume such things neglect to consider the edges that lie inside the map; places that are so remote, so wild, so untameable, that they might as well be terra incognita.
Godsbarrow Forest is one such place. Long before the Ordaynian tribesmen pushed back the goliaths and the orcs and built their nation, the Godsbarrow was already a place where brave folk would fear to tread. Woodsmen huddled around campfires tell stories of the place, of the secrets that it might yet still hold, and warn their children against venturing too close.
Many races have made their home amongst the pines, conifers and redwoods of the forest. Werewolves prowl the border of the woods at night, sniffing for any humans that might have lost their way in the dark. Goblins cluster in treetop villages, scanning the forest floor for prey. Night hags forage in the undergrowth for ingredients to add to their noxious potions. And if someone has a particularly sharp eye, that might even spot a reclusive forest gnome or two scuttling out of their secret dens.
With regards to its name, although there are plenty of ruins of one sort or another to be found amidst the trees, there is not, as far as anyone can tell, the barrow of a deity. But then, the forest is vast, and not even its most itinerant trackers have penetrated the deepest parts of the woods. Who knows what else lies at the heart of the Godsbarrow...
