Myr (any pronouns) is the
Deity of Love. Their
Divine Domains include Confidence, Creation, Family, Healing, Indulgence, Life, Light, Luck, Passion, Secrecy, Trickery and Truth. Other aliases include Arro.
History
Myr is one of the oldest known deities with mortals praying to them to bless romantic unions and childbirth since before written history began. Always a god of action, Myr's enthusiasm for directly aiding mortals often led to their interference with other deities and influenced many battles of The Divine Wars. Their natural charisma, however, brought several other gods to their side and attracted a devoted following among mortals. Myr had little hand in the eventual treaty that ended the Wars, though one of their Aspects saw to a last-minute advantageous addition by convincing
Brashar to include a stipulation in the treaty that Arro can return to the world for one day each year. Outside of this day, they take what liberties they can to care for the mortal realm.
Personality
Myr has always been enamored of mortal life, temporarily possessing willing followers in the past in order to spend time among living souls. They are sometimes seen as frivolous or flighty by other gods due to the seemingly small things they used their power for, such as returning a fallen egg to its nest, but they pay no mind to the judgments of other gods.
Myr's aid does not always take the form their followers might envision. One story tells of a time when Myr aided two lovers who prayed to them for protection. The lovers were children of two different, warring kings and hoped that their union might broker peace. Myr, however, unconcerned with the kingdoms' politics and only wishing to protect the lovers from harm, transformed the pair into immortal swans. Their sudden disappearance caused a newfound hatred between the kings, each blaming the other for their children's sudden disappearance. With renewed vigor, the kingdoms clashed and, eventually, were both brought low while the lovers were helpless to do anything but watch.
Appearance & Aspects
In visions, Myr appears as a human with flowing golden hair, wearing a white masquerade mask and white tunic—each with golden embroidery—and with gold butterflies flitting about him. It is said that, when he could possess his followers, they would still have butterflies accompanying them.
Myr also has the Aspect of Arro, a noble human woman who carries a small bouquet of purple wildflowers in one hand. If she smears pollen of the flowers over someone's eyes, they fall in love with the next compatible creature they see. Once per year, on
Ghandt 13th of Rivend, "Arro's Flight" occurs: a day when Arro freely roams the world causing mischief by smearing pollen upon unsuspecting persons. Fortunately, the effect of her pollen ends at sundown on the day of the holiday.
Relationships
Myr has a strange relationship with the God of Change. Though both deities have a knack for intervening in mortal lives, Azazul does so in far more unpredictable ways. While Myr may help someone down on their luck by sending an animal companion, Azazul may "help" them by leading them to the corpse of a recently-murdered noble with a full wallet on their body. The two have had spirited arguments about the proper method of bringing change with many an unfortunate mortal over time serving as object lessons in their debates.
Myr and Brashar have overlapping roles in many mortals' lives. Though Myr is asked to bless the love between mortals, Brashar is asked to protect the vows they make in marriage. As such, their respective priests often co-officiate marriages when able. The gods themselves, despite differing in temperament, are said to get along well with some going so far as to say Brashar is wholly devoted to Myr, though it's unclear if the flighty deity returns his affections.
Followers
Myr's followers refer to themselves as their Children and the church's high priests are called Firstborn. The naming derives from the belief that the first priest of the official church was a demigod, born of Myr and a mortal. Those who worship Arro most often do so in addition to their devotion to Myr and, as such, use the same naming convention.
There is a sect of followers which call themselves "Children of the New Morning." They say there will come a day when Myr will once again be able to personally visit the Material Plane to save them from all of the wrongs of the world. The church at large treats this as heresy, but allows it to persist as a relatively harmless belief.
Tenets & Practices
The primary tenet preached by Myr's Children is that life is meant to be shared and enjoyed with others. They believe that it is their primary responsibility to uphold free will and protect the bonds that mortals forge. They are further encouraged to take an active role in aiding all those around them and to forge bonds of their own wherever they may go. It is anathema for Children to force others into any form of service, or to sabotage otherwise happy relationships.
Those who follow Arro additionally teach that physical intimacy is the pinnacle of mortal connection, but any who misuse or force that connection are held in utter contempt and met with wrath.
Holy Symbol
Myr's holy symbol is a golden butterfly-shaped masquerade mask. Their Firstborn will often wear such a mask to denote their station, but other Children without the means to produce or purchase a mask will instead keep a gold-colored butterfly-shaped pendant or emblem to represent their faith.
Arro's holy symbol is a white bow and arrow, fletched with delicate purple flowers rather than feathers. It is less commonly seen than Myr's gold butterfly and those who use Arro's symbol are generally only her most fervent followers.
