In the Month of the Harvest Festival, several members of Port Harmony encountered a golem aggrieving the wildlife outside The Broken Wheel with the command "conquer" emitting from the rod driven into it. When it was destroyed, we all briefly saw a vision that was apparently Writ's ascension, as he was battling against a titanic being made of fire. Later, Basil, who works closely with Asriel who is presently one (if not the only member) of Port Harmony capable of creating golems, and it was noted that the golem had the most advanced build he has ever seen or had reason to believe was even possible.
From "Praise to the Ascendant," Writ is accredited as "the Chainbreaker, who choked the foul forges." The Icon of the Great Defiler being a mountain with a crown, the description of "foul forges," and the encounter with the golem has led us to believe that the Great Defiler was indeed the Watcher that Writ defeated.

ALSO, the name Great Defiler was carved into the control rod sticking out of the Golem!
The name carved into the control rod was the Great Defiler's true name, which I dare not put to paper.
