Khandarian
The Khandarians are a once-human tribe, now bound to un-death after being cursed by the necromantic being known to Terra Nova as "the Janja". Forced for centuries to serve as the Janja's shock troops in his war against the living in Terra Nova, the Khandarians were a powerful military force when bound under the will of their master. Even with their free will surpressed by the Janja, their martial skill and physical strength made them proficient warriors, with their natural rugged resilience bolstered by the powers given to them by undeath. It was only when the Janja fell, banished from the living world by the combined might of Terra Nova's armies, and the heroes of Port Harmony, that the Khandarians were released from the Janja's control.
The Khandarians scattered to the wastelands after their escape from the Janja's control, and slowly reconvened with eachother before heading south east through the frozen wastes in order to put distance between themselves and the memories of their subjugation. The Khandarians began to realize that their bodies did not return to life, though control of their bodies was know returned to the Khandarians. As they continued to travel eastward, led by Jarl Sigvat, they found a cold unforgiving forest known to many as the Silent Wood. Filled with monstrous and worthy challenges to their martial strength, yet isolated enough to offer the Khandarians privacy and defence, Jarl Sigvat held moot, and commanded that the Khandarians begin the task of claiming the Silent Wood for a home.
Physically, Khandarians still strongly resemble humans, if only being frozen, dead humans. Khandarians are physically powerful, and were famed even before their undeath to be rugged wilderness survivors, finding rest where ever they may find themselves. Now, bolstered by a curse they do not fully understand, many khandarians find their are nigh-unkillable, the thick cold blood running slow in their veins. While their bodies have no need of food or water, it seems their spirits benefit from consumption of such things. Khandarians who refuse food or drink for too long can risk death, their spirit seemingly "remembering" that the body is dead, and leaving for the afterlife. So the Khandarians drink and feast much as they did in life, in order to nurture their spirits, reminding them of the joys of life.
The Khandarians remember very little of their lives before the Janja came to them and subjugated their people, and remember next to nothing about their time under his direct control. Of their living lives, the Khandarians remember they were semi-nomadic, travelling the colder climes of Terra Nova wherever food and adventure wood take them. They prized honor, freedom, and protection of ones own as vital values to a succesful society. They prized the memories of their anscenstors, burying their dead in great mounds, sealing them with spiritual magics across Terra Nova.
With no written language of their own, the Khandarians relied on stories to convey their history. They once used these stories to pass on their histories to their children, but now, with no new children to teach, the Khandarians wish to relearn these stories to possibly uncover more knowledge if their lost history. Collected by a group of learned warrior-shamans known as Grimspeakers, the Khandarians wish to recollect their lost stories, and make safe their new home so that they can make sense of their new state of being.
Spiritually, the Khandarians were very connected to their ancestors and the spirits of fallen kin before the Janja. Some Khandarians believe this was another reason why the Janja waged his war on the Khandarians, in order to make use of that spiritual connection. Regardless, the Khandarians respect the gods for their strength and station, but find themselves by nature drawn to commune with Finis, the God of the Dead. With a mix of spiritual respect and animism, most Khandarians fall short of actually worshipping Finis, but those who do are understood easily by other Khandarians. As a people, every Khandarian has seen the cold hand of Finis at work, and in some half remembered moments from their subjugation, some claim to have seen his fleshless skull in their mind.
Now the Khandarians face an uncertain future, faced with distrust at their appearance and nature, despite a desire to set up trade and commerce with their neighbors. Under the leadership of Jarl Sigvat, The Khandarians are determined to meet the challenge of this new age, head on and without fear.
