Mage Killer Gauntlets

These intricately decorated gauntlets are covered in runes. A large gemstone is set into the center of each gauntlet. As more magic is stored in the gauntlets, the gems will grow brighter and brighter.    When the wielder of these gauntlets is targeted by a spell and either the spell misses or they pass the save, they can use their reaction to absorb the magical energy. The gauntlets gain 1 charge for each spell absorbed, and the central gem begins to glow brighter. The gauntlets can hold a maximum of 5 charges. They lose 1 charge each dawn.    After successfully hitting a creature with an attack, the Mage Killer Gauntlets wielder can expend up to as many charges as they have stored as part of the attack. Each expended charge adds 2d8 of Force damage.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The runes covering the gauntlets absorb magic that has failed to take hold nearby and channel it into the central gem where the energy is stored and waiting to be unleashed.

History

Mage Killer Gauntlets were developed during the Arcanum Wars of the second age. They were used heavily by all sides as a way to give warriors an edge against the mages running wild. How to make these gauntlets was lost for centuries and has only recently been rediscovered in a long buried Library in the Shadowlands. Since then they are becoming more common and are prized by adventurers and assassins alike.
