Realm Tear

Located in the Southwestern continent, the realm tear is the original source of Elemental magic moving into Erina. It swirls and crackles with all forms of Elemental magics, and Golden energy, and is surrounded with a permanent dead zone of molten lava, crystals, metals, frozen ice, and electrified water. The magic in the air as one approaches is palpable, constantly switching from searing hot to cold, to electricity under your skin, to a crushing pressure on your chest. It has been said that only a Nature Elemental could even dare to approach the tear, since no other Elemental would be immune to the effects of all the magics at once. However, the last recorded time this ever occurred was when Cyrene Amaryllis did so near the beginning of the Elemental Age, and she never returned. Rumours suggest the Cyrene entered the tear, travelling to the realm of magics, others believe that Cyrene sacrificed herself to partially close the tear that was once much larger.

Regardless of what Cyrene did or did not do, for any regular Elemental, the Realm tear is incredibly dangerous. Its effects are clear within the landscape of the Southwestern continent, with the effects of all four Elemental magics constantly changing the landscape. Over the course of the year the continent cycles, from the arid and burning summer signalling the influence of Fire Magic, to the snow coated land as the power of Ice Magic takes hold instead. None of the four ever hold a complete grasp on the world here, so there are always patches of warmth even in the winter months.

The influence of the realm tear is clear in the species that occupies the land it influences. Dragons. Through the initial effects of the magic that poured into the world after the tear was created, likely one of the most interesting and magically influenced species was born. Many would argue that Dragons are not influenced like Elementals or other magically integrated species are, but more created from its essence alone. Especially given their ability to create portals to other universes at will with an Enigma crystal growing on their foreheads. When a dragon is killed, but their bonded Elemental survives, they are reborn from the realm tear, their own magic swirling as they exit and reform as a physical being.

Creation

It took a great amount of energy as well as a very unfortunate target to create the realm tear. Prior to the Age of Mourning, human conflict between two nations came to a head. Thermonuclear weapons were launched at large chunks of both the Southwestern and Central Continent. However, while the result of the bombs changed the Central Continent into the wasteland it is today, something else occurred in the Southwestern continent. And while the devastation amid the Central continent was predictable, the same could not have been said about what occurred at the location of what is now the realm tear. On one side there were massive casualties, injuries eventually leading to death, and those that would have had accessible bunkers to hide in until they were evacuated. On the other, there were no survivors.

Within the capital city of one of the involved countries on the Southwestern continent was a massive cache of enigma crystals in the ground. They filled the underground caves and mines. And as the capital city, this was a primary target for their enemies. Thermonuclear bombs cause massive radiation to soil, and as the bombs hit, the neutrons that erupted would find themselves within the enigma crystals. Modern Erina knows now what such a large amount of energy entering one of these crystals would do. Past Erina (or Earth as the humans called it at the time) did not. With such a high amount of both parts within the city, portals opened in the air, over and over again. Along with the initial deaths of the humans living there, Gold entered these portals and the enigma crystals. The portal began to amalgamate, crushing together and growing ever larger. This created a force dragging part of the material world's Gold, along with everything around it, apart. Growing even more. At some point it caved in on itself, four times, and creating within it the four Elemental realms that exist within. But not before destroying everything it could.

At first, the swirling storm of Magical Energy was a massive hurricane, constantly turning above the continent. Even those that would attempt to get close to the shore would either be forced to turn back or meet their end. Somewhere in this primordial soup of magical energy and torn apart universal fabric came the dragons. The land, as brutally destroyed as it once, was no wasteland. But the tear remains dangerous.
