Tales: Vonir's Wrath

Summary

This tale is told to children, usually to keep them behaving, especially around their parents. The tale consists of a young boy who has a nasty attitude towards live. His mother warns if he does not behave, the god of destruction Vonir will get angry and take things from him.   The child does not listen and continues to act inappropriately by taking an other child's toy. When he takes his "new" toy back to his home, he find that all of his old toys lie broken in his room. Furious, the young boy marches back to his victim, thinking they did it.   The boy then confronts his victim, however, the victim's parent sees this, takes back the stolen toy and marches the boy back to his home, warning if he does not act right Vonir would destroy a lot more than just his toys.   By the time they reach the boy's home, he would see that a fire has spread onto his home, setting it ablaze, taking everything from the young boy.

Historical Basis

While Vonir is the god of destruction, he never usually acts upon individuals, especially out of spite, but it would be very possible for him to commit the acts seen in the story.

Spread

This is usually only told in urban areas of Lyrinthia, and does not usually spread much further.

Variations & Mutation

In other, darker variants, the boy finds his parents dead or the parents were inside the house as it burned to the ground.

Cultural Reception

This story is prevalent, but not really regarded as fact once someone reaches past a certain age, much like the boogieman or similar stories in the real world.

There are books containing children's stories and this one is usually included as a cautionary tale.

In Art

There is a stained glass window depicting this story in the temple of Vonir in both Mergewater and Dawngate
