Dashia

The capital city of Traia, Dashia is a large, cosmopolitan metropolis that is also the religious and cultural center for the country. Situated at the mouth of the Mazii River, which is the backbone of life in Traia, Dashia controls the entirety of the country behind it. Dashia takes its name for its patron goddess, Dashae. A sixty foot tall statue of her rests just inside the Klashti Gate, but there are hundreds of statues, at least one at every intersection, and altars dedicated to her throughout the city.

Defences

Dashia is surrounded by walls at that are at least eighty feet tall and thirty feet thick at their base. In many places they are considerably higher and thicker. A large set of towers and chain system spread across the navigable portion of the Mazii river, preventing invaders from coming down river into the city. The natural harbor has a similar system at its mouth.   The main gate into the city is the Klashti Gate and it is fifty feet high and made of hardened timbers six feet thick and banded in iron. The gates are so massive they have to be opened from the inside by teams of oxen. An iron portcullis can be dropped into place in front of the gates if necessary. The gatehouse is flanked by two large towers that allow clear lines of fire approaching the gate with murder holes allowing defenders to drop burning hot sand or rocks on attackers from above.   The Klashti Gate does not open directly into the city either. Instead it opens into a large bailey that immediately turns ninety degrees to the right, south, and proceeds for another hundred yards before turning ninety degrees again to face east and another, smaller gate before opening into the city proper. Both sides of the bailey are heavily fortified and road between them is intentionally narrow. Despite standing for a thousand years the gates and walls of Dashia have never been breached.

Industry & Trade

The vast majority of Dashia's incomes come from taxes and duties levied against goods moving through her port.

Infrastructure

Large aqueducts carry freshwater from an elevated point up the Mazii and is used to power waterwheels, and irrigation all over the delta.   Inside the black walls Dashia is a city of white marble. It has dozens of courtyards, gardens, and fountains, many dedicated to Dashae. The main road through Dashia runs from the Klashti Gates all the way to the ports and is called the Way of a Thousand Gods. It is lined with statues, each dedicated to a different god or hero from Traia's expansive pantheon.

History

More than a thousand years ago the first king of Traia, a legendary ruler known as King Tranion built the first castle on the Palace Hill in what would grow to be Dashia. That first castle was mostly built of mud brick and timber.   Centuries passed and each subsequent ruler added onto and improved the structure. The first King of Wazida, King Tranin Wazida, built the walls around Dashia almost a seven hundred years ago. King Hakim IV Ilasan built the first religious complex on Temple Hill, and Queen Jasmeen Ilasan had the roads paved in limestone and great courts and fountains of marble built across the city, many of which are still in use today.   For more than a thousand years Dashia has stood against the desert on the west and the ocean on the east. It predates the entirety of the kingdom itself, and while it's not the oldest settlement in the kingdom it is certainly the grandest.

Architecture

Most buildings in Dashia are made of either limestone or brick, but the largest and most prominent are either outright made or marble or have marble facades built over structures of limestone. The fountains, courtyards, and many, many statues are almost exclusively made of marble, and diorite.

Geography

Dashia is situated at the mouth of the Mazii River on the eastern edge of the continent, Corynos. The land here is relatively flat except for two large hills inside the city, one of which serves as the Temple District, and another walled complex that comprises the Royal Palace. Around the city the land is wet and boggy thanks to silt pulled downstream by the Mazii. The Great Port of Dashia is a large, deep natural harbor allowing access to hundreds of the largest ships sailing the seas at a time.

Natural Resources

The Great Port is a large, natural harbor at the mouth of the Mazii River. The harbor, and the delta it encircles, are incredibly important for the survival of the largely desert country. Without the delta, and the harbor to protect it, Traia could not feed itself. Instead Traia has such an abundant agricultural production every year that  exports a wide variety of products from grains like rice to fruits like olives, and a variety of citrus.   Salt, tin, gems, copper, iron and silver are also all mined in various places around the country. Traian steel is widely regarded as some of the best in the world and weapons made from it are prized for their durability and sharpness throughout the known world.
