Shipwright, Boats or ships

Characters who grew up as an apprentice under, assistant to, or who practiced the works of a boat/shipwright, will have the chance to have this particular Extra Skill. For it pertains primarily to the knowledge of boats & ships and how they are constructed, including constructing the keel and frame, planking the hull, building the deck, installing masts & rigging, chaulking the ship and outfitting the rooms. Thus while the character never has to be the one making or overseeing construction of the boat/ship, they do need to have been exposed to the process for long periods of time. This time would need to be vastly longer if the character is learning on their own without a mentor.

With the knowledge and experience of a boatwright/shipwright under their belt, characters with this skill can expertly appraise boats and ships without any rolls, & properly determine the condition of it from front to back. This could result in discovering that the ship is flawed in some way, and thus subjected to leaks, breaking while on a voyage, or being more vulnerable to attacks & hits, an average but good quality ship, superior hull made with expertise that can take more hits than most other ships, or even whether the ship is on the verge of falling apart or is in peak condition. In addition, should one with this skill spot any damage to the armor, so long as it isn't irreversable, they can repair the damage with the appropriate tools, materials and time to do so without any rolls (unless rushing the job).

Furthermore the character with this skill has a keen eye for quality ships, thus any ship they pick out will have an additional +1 to +2 to their total defense points (if such quality ships are available). They can also attempt to spot weak points in enemy ship hulls. To do this, they must roll a Boat Wright Proficiency Check (no modifiers allowed for this), with a +4/20% penalty to the roll in the middle of combat. Should they succeed their check and they report this to the captain & crew, attacks from bastillae, catapults, trebuchet, cannons and ramming deal +1 or +2 structural damage to ships. In generally this is primarily for ships, or for boats, and when piloting one the character isn't skilled in they must make a boating proficiency check with a +1 to their roll.
