Miner

Having worked inside mines and beside other miners, you have the necessary knowledge to locate potential mining locations and ore veins. With the right tools you can also extract ores from said ore veins, or gemstones from the stone. This process can take some time however, and may or may not require a miner proficiency check with a +1 to ensure the ore is extracted without causing a cave in. Additionally those with the miner skill will have a +1 when making a sound analysis check in caves and can identify water caves and air currents before they are opened up.     Characters who grew up as an apprentice under, assistant to, or who practiced the works of miners and mining overseers, will have the chance to have this particular Extra Skill. For it pertains primarily to the knowledge of locating good mining locations, excavating the mines, stabalizing the mines, finding and harvesting the ore veins. Thus while the character never has to be the one actually mining or running the mining operation, they do need to have been exposed to the process for long periods of time. This time would need to be vastly longer if the character is learning on their own without a mentor.

With the knowledge and experience of a Miner under their belt, characters with this skill can expertly appraise the environment, both on the surface and below, & properly determine the right spots to mine in. This could be done by knowing what type of ores are found in different regions and spotting signs of minerals and ores in the soil and rocks, and are also able to determine what the chances of it being an average or large sized vein are going to be as well as appraise the approximate purity or quality of the minerals, ores or gemstones to be mined. In addition, one with this skill can not only recognize and create various tunnels, supports, and ventilations built for mineshafts, but they can also mine and dig out, or oversee and direct the mining of, ores so long as they have the appropriate tools, materials and time to do so without any rolls (unless it's a rush job, in which failed rolls results in lower quantity and quality).

Furthermore the character with this skill has a better chance to successfully navigate underground, having a +1 to direction sense when underground. Given their knowledge of stones and minerals, they can attempt to spot weak points in natural stone and metal (not manmade or shaped). To do this they must roll an Ability Check, with a -4 penalty to the roll in the middle of combat. Should they succeed their check, any attack made by the skill owner against the stone/mineral deals double the original damage, and if the skill owner directs other's attention to the weak point, they will likewise deal double damage. Those with this skill gain a +1 to their Miner and Smelter proficiency.
