Jeweler/Lapidary

Characters who grew up as an apprentice under, assistant to, or who practiced the works of a jeweler, lapidar and gem cutter, will have the chance to have this particular Extra Skill. For it pertains primarily to the knowledge of jewelry and how they are made, including the process of heating and shaping the precious metals, cutting and setting the gemstones, filigreeing and engraving the jewelry, and polishing & finishing the jewelry. Thus while the character never has to be the one making the armor, they do need to have been exposed to the process for long periods of time. This time would need to be vastly longer if the character is learning on their own without a mentor.

With the knowledge and experience of a Jeweler under their belt, characters with this skill can expertly appraise jewelry of any sort without any rolls, & properly determine the purity and quality of the jewelry. This could result in discovering that the jewelry is flawed in some way, and thus prone to breaking or falling apart more easily, if it's average but good quality, if it's made of false silver/gold/platinum and if it has fake gemstones, if it is in pristine condition and cannot be improved any further, the exact type of material the jewelry and gemstone is made of, and even be able to determine it's exact worth. In addition, should one with this skill spot any damage to the jewelry or gemstone, so long as it isn't irreversable, they can repair the damage with the appropriate tools, materials, and time to do so without any rolls (unless rushing the job).

Furthermore the character with this skill can attempt to spot hidden slots, purposefully loose sections, and even hidden symbols or sigils that show when rotated or moved in a certain manner with an ability check, with a +1 to their roll. They likewise have a +1 when rolling to figure out a puzzle ring, amulet, bracelet, etc. Jewelers can also improve the quality of jewelry in general with the appropriate tools, materials and time to do so, though they may require a roll if they are rushing the job through an ability check.
