Sovaro

On the tip of the Thymomen desert and beside the Poseiatic Ocean, the city of Sovaro is the only settlement that has managed to survive in the blistering heat of the desert.

Demographics

Sovaro is an industrial city dedicated to the mining and refinement of raw materials, particularly hazardous materials such as phosphorus. Many of the residents of the city work in as iron miners, and others obtain phosphorus from the shallow shores of the Poseiatic Ocean.   There are a handful of hunters in Sovaro, and they have chosen Grave Badgers as their quarry. They sell the poisonous glands which they extract from the four legs of the small mammal. Their pelts can also be rather valuable if kept in good condition. There is very little fat or good meat on Grave Badgers, making hunting them for food to be ineffective.

Government

Taxes in Sovaro are rather low, due to the relatively low level of public services that are carried out in Sovaro. The majority of tax money goes to security and food for those that cannot afford it.   The Senator of Sovaro is Cynthia Erimos, and she is known for her laid-back and carefree attitude towards managing the city of Sovaro and its territory. As long as the water purifiers are working and there are no accidents in the factories, Cynthia has little to worry herself about on a daily basis.

Defences

There are large watchtowers on the walls of the city of Sovaro. Mounted on these watchtowers are cannons loaded with phosphoric cannonballs, which explode and burn when they impact with a solid surface. The fire of these cannons are incredibly difficult to extinguish.   The Sovaric Guards are armed with pikes made of bronze, with pistols as a sidearm. They wear bronze armour and always carry multiple water canteens in order to prevent heatstroke.

Industry & Trade

There are large steel refinery plants in Sovaro, which employ almost one quarter of the city. They pay miners to collect iron from the mines so that chrome and carbon can be added to create stainless steel. This steel is then shaped into ingots and transported throughout the Authenian Republic so that it can be used for various purposes.   Many within Sovaro harvest the vast amounts of phosphorus that can be found in the shores of the Poseiatic Ocean. It must be collected with caution, as it begins to smoulder when exposed to air. It is placed in jars of water in order to stop it from slowly combusting. Weapon manufacturers uses phosphorus in order to create incendiary and explosive bullets, and it is also used by Sovaric glassmakers on order to fabricate reinforced volcanic glass, a material as strong as iron.

Assets

The Viper's Pouch is an alchemist's shop that specializes in toxins that can be used to great and lethal effect. Owned by the alchemist Edgar Raxen, a high elf with a fascination for poison. Many question his sanity, but all are adamant that his skill in fabricating poisons is peerless. He pays hunters generous sums for the venom glands of Grave Badgers.   Coeus Creations is a decorative glass shop. It makes crystalline glass containers. From vases, carafes, bottles and drinking glasses. It also makes items out of reinforced glass, a material as hard as iron. The shop is owned by Oscar Benenjeries, a goblin with a perfectionist's work ethic when it comes to making his glassware.

Guilds and Factions

The Church of Hades is most prevalent in the city of Sovaro. They have their largest temple and the High Priest of Hades is located within it. Many followers of Hades and the Chthonic Gods consider the city to be sacred and feel obligated to visit the city at least once in their lifetime.   The Adamant Sickle trading company has invested in the iron mines and steel mills of Sovaro, and they regularly keep tabs on all their investments, often using undercover supervisors in order to assess the situation.

Architecture

The buildings and walls of Sovaro are made out of sandstone and granite. Bricks of sandstone make up the city wall, with a mixture of sandstone and granite making up the roads. Wood is used sparingly, due to their relative rarity in the Thymomen desert.   The temple of Hades within Sovaro is the only major exception to this rule, as the building is made out of onyx and obsidian bricks, with wooden pillars inside as decorative structural support.

Natural Resources

On the shores of the Poseiatic Ocean, right next to Sovaro, there are large deposits of phosphorus. This phosphorus is used in the production of reinforced glass, and in the production of incendiary bullets. It must be stored in jars of water in order to stop it from reacting with the air and smouldering and combusting.   Large veins of iron can be found within the sands of the Thymomen desert. The majority of this iron is used to produce steel that is then made into tools, weapons and armour. A large portion of this iron is also used to create building components such as nails, locks and metal fittings.
