Lysan

Lysan is an Authenian City dedicated to the god Ares. Thousands of years old and still keeping many of their traditions intact, Lysan has a rich history and culture.

Demographics

As a city dedicated to Ares, the citizens of Lysan place high value on martial strength, with many of its citizens joining the military for at least two years before returning home.   Because most males leave to join the military, most of the city guards of Lysan are women, and they are famous for their ferocity and determination in battle.   Whilst it is not law, most men are expected to join the military for at least two years once they reach adulthood, as is the ancient tradition. Soldiers from Lysan are some of the finest in the Authenian Military.   Culturally, Lysan favours masculine qualities in all its residents. Most citizens are physically strong, have practical jobs and can appreciate the glory of battle in some way. Style for both men and women is almost identical, most wear either tunics, togas or stolas, as well as sandals or boots. The entire city places security very highly, making guards receive large amounts of respect and reverence from their fellow Lysanians. Ares is worshipped by almost all citizens, and Aphrodite is also worshipped by a large amount of the population.

Government

When Lysan became part of the Authenian Republic, they signed an agreement to ensure that their culture would remain strong. In order to make certain that both Authenian laws and Lysanian traditions remained intact, it was agreed that the ruling monarch of Lysan would share power with an Authenian senator, ensuring that both sides were satisfied.

Defences

If anything dares to threaten Lysan, it will have to face the full force of the Areites, who would happily die to protect the city they hold sacred. Each Areite is enough to slay a dozen foes without losing their breath and their numbers in Lysan are always high.   The guards of Lysan are almost entirely female, and they are known for their great courage and determination in defending their home. They wield bronze spears, helmets, shields and plate armour. They are skilled and physically superior to most threats they face.   The AMC has its main headquarters in Lysan, and as such it is well equiped to defend it. They have been investing in arcanists and artificers in order to enchant the weaponry and armour of all the guards, significantly increasing their lethality. Ballistas have been mounted on the watchtowers in order to deal with any possible threats at range.

Industry & Trade

The wilderness near Lysan are filled with mountain lions, black bears and boars, which are hunted for their meats and pelts. Many citizens find success as hunters.   On the ouskirts of Lysan are vast apple orchards. Some citizens find work tending to these orchards. Though some of these apples are sold in their natural state, the vast majority is sold to the Broadshield Cider Mill, where these apples are processed into cider. Many in Lysan are employed by this mill.   Large abundances of adamant have been found in a network of caves beneath Lysan, this adamant is mined and refined within the city and used to create weapons and armour of great strength.

Guilds and Factions

The Areites consider the city of Lysan to be sacred, and have a headquarters within the city, which they use between fights to rest, repair their equipment and heal their wounds. The Areites are at their most peaceful within Lysan, as they see the city as a holy place, chosen by their Lord Ares.   The AMC has its main headquarters within Lysan, where it strategizes new ways to improve their military might and uncover any possible dangers to the Republic that can be solved through martial strength.

History

The city of Lysan was founded by the first Areites, over three thousand years ago. It served as a grand fortress for the Areites and as a symbol of Ares' superiority to Athena. Lysan has been the center stage of many important battles, though it has never been conquered, cementing the fact that Ares has given his favour and utmost loyalty to the city and its residents. In 1078, Lysan offically became part of the Authenian Republic.

Points of interest

At the very center of the city, there is a large marble statue of Ares, bedecked in his armour and holding a blade, pointing it ahead of him. Many come to pray and worship at the statue. There are legends that throughout history, in times of great need, Ares himself possessed the statue to speak to the inhabitants, though an event such as this has not been recorded for hundreds of years.   Despite the city being dedicated to Ares, there is a small temple held in honour of Aphrodite, as she and Ares are lovers.   The marketplace in Lysan is one of the largest in The Republic, and nearly anything can be found, from magical weaponry to three hundred year old wine. Many visit Lysan every year just to come to the markets.   There is only one arena in the entire Authenian Republic, and it can be found in Lysan. Though it still holds matches for public amusement, they are no longer to the death. Two abjuration wizards oversee the match and prevent any possible killing blows.

Architecture

The outer walls of Lysan are made of pure white marble strengthened with steel support beams. Watchtowers are strategically places to ensure any possible dangers to the city are spotted quickly.   Houses are typically built from ash wood, with windows made from volcanic sand. Plaster is usually applied to the inside of houses, in order to insulate them. Industrial buildings are made from marble bricks, keeping them fireproof and structurally stable. Government buildings are made from pure white marble, adorned with red banners with an image of a shield and two crossed spears in yellow, in reverence to Ares.
