The Amber Temple

"When the builders die, the temple remains.

When rivers dry, the temple remains.

When the mountains are dust, the temple remains.

Here shall the fell and the wicked lie."

  - Exethanter of the Heavenly Mind

The Lector

The Amber Temple is a place whispered about in hushed tones by even the bravest folk of fell Barovia. At the end of a twisting path hugging sheer cliffs blasted by blizzards, after passing through a gate of fire, the Amber Temple sits atop a mountain, carved into the very rock. Inside lies death - and the secrets of the world.   The Temple was founded millennia ago by monks from the Order of the Heavenly Mind and Oroborites, long before Strahd had occupied the surrounding country. During the waning years of the 3rd cycle, as Sanguine's power diminished, a fortress-temple was built in the Baloks to act as a prison, storing Her spirit in amber sarcophagi, along with her greatest lieutenants.     By the time the outlanders arrived at the Temple in 735, the monks were long gone, with the exception of one: the Lector. The one remaining monk, a half-senile lich, guarded the Temple against evil with the help of his earnest assistant, a bizarre, fox-like creature called Neferon, and Arcanaloth. Also guarding the temple were a legion of flameskulls set to incinerate any who trespassed.
