Krezk

"The somber toll of a bell rang from the abbey as we approached Krezk. The chime was inviting - a welcome change from the deathly silence of the wood. But I knew that what lurked there was as fell as any horror of Barovia."

The Curse of Strahd: a Chronicle

The fortified village of Krezk lies in the Western region of Strahd's domain, near the border with Emrath. Even here, there is no escape from the vampire's influence. The villagers here live in constant terror of the wolves of Strahd's domain, and almost never venture from the village. Their food comes from farms within the fortifications, their water from wells within the town. The only resource they do not make for themselves is wine, which is imported from the Wizard of Wines a few days march to the south.

Above Krezk, clinging to the mountainside, is the Abbey of St. Markovia. Travelers hoping for healing and respite there would be sorely disappointed, for the Abbey is a nightmarish madhouse of the macabre. The villagers of Krezk speak in fearful tones of "the Abbot" - a powerful being who occupies the Abbey. What little is known about the Abbot is that he is apparently immortal, and twists wounded travelers who seek his care into freaks.

Recently, Burgomaster Dmitri's son Ilya was taken by illness. Distraught by the loss of his only son, the humble Burgomaster approached the Abbot for aid. In an act of genuine benevolence, the Abbot warned the Burgomaster that he had been dead for too long to resurrect properly. But the Burgomaster and his wife insisted, and Ilya was resurrected. At first, all seemed well. But soon, Ilya proved to be twisted by the hell of the Barovian afterlife, taken by a Dark Power and filled with unnatural gluttony. The Burgomaster's wife, Anna, tried to hide this fact, even blaming a hapless farmboy for the large number of sheep that had gone recently missing.

And so when the party of adventurers from the Empire reached Krezk in search of a blacksmith, they soon encountered the ravenous form of Ilya devouring a helpless villager, and put him down. Burgomaster Dmitri stumbled off in a fit of madness after his wife was hanged by the vengeful townsfolk, and a new Burgomaster was elected. The townsfolk of Krezk and the adventurers hosted a wild night of festivities to celebrate their victory.
