Einherjar, Valkyr, and the Haloghast

On a winter night a crowd of ten thousand mourners surrounded the dark Eldermere, nestled in the foot of a mountain, the air bitter with frost. A circle of many warriors surrounded a smaller circle of elders wearing elkskull masks, surrounding in turn a longboat 100 feet long, poised on a ramp. Chants were raised and a young man, Ulric, stepped forth. "I name this ship the Haloghast, and may it grant my father swift passage to the Overhall! Tyr, may he feast in your hall forever at your side! May the raven guide his spirit to the Overhall. May the Bear grant him strength to survive! May the Wolf grant him the cunning to guide our people from the heavens! May he be thrice blessed by Tyr forever!" And with that prayer, a flame struck the Haloghast and it slid into the mere, its light illuminating Drakenhelm until dawn.   The spirit of Holm Graelingard ascended to the Overhall in the great ship Haloghast, rowed by the spirits of his comrades who had fallen long before at Frostfang and who greeted him like brothers and sisters, and he arrived at the gates of the Overhall. But Tyr, ever prideful, was wary of the ship. "Who comes to my hall in such a grandiose display? Do you presume because of what you have done that you stand above the other faithful and that it is your right to enter thus?". But Holm, only ever thinking of his folk, responded: "Nay father, my people have only constructed thee a ship to better ferry your faithful to the Overhall! If only you would allow me to aid you in this and continue to be thine faithful follower I would gladly take my place among the ranks of your companions in the Overhall!".   And Tyr relented, and embraced Holm. "My son, I see that there is great honour within you. Take the place of the gatekeeper to the Overhall as my trusted jarl, and your warriors will be at my side and shall be known hence forth as the Einherjar (Companions), and your sons and daughters shall captain the Haloghast in your stead and ferry the dead, your daughter Valka at the helm".   And so it is that with the passing of Holm Graelingard I, the Haloghast, the great ship of the dead, began sailing the skies. And the mortals know it as the north star, and it guides them always to the correct path. When a faithful of Tyr dies, the spirits of Holm's daughters and their chosen, the Valkyries pass into the Ethereal Plane upon the Haloghast and ferry the fallen to the Overhall, where they are set before Holm Graelingard in a cave of glimmering ice to be judged for their deeds before entry to the Overhall.
