Dwarves

Kingdoms rich in mithril and fine stonework, brass golems striding along steam-filled passages of pipes and cogs, vast feasting halls filled with the low murmurs of thousands of grumbling miners - these are some of the greatest works of the proud dwarven people.   Dwarves, or dwemer, in the Khazak tongue, are a dwindling race of long-lived folk with a predilection for grudges and industrious labour, at least compared to humans. Stereotypically thought to be short, stocky, and greedy, dwarves in fact display about as much diversity as any other race, and dwarves from a particular part of the world may be more culturally similar to neighboring humans than dwarves from a different continent. Regardless, the dwarves have given the land of Erden many great contributions: gunpowder, mithril, and animantic lore are all dwarven inventions.   Physically, dwarves are slightly shorter than humans, averaging at about 5 feet tall, but weigh the same. They tend to have ears that end in points, much like elves. Dwarves have more facial hair than humans, on average, and many dwarves cultures view beard length as a desirable trait. Dwarves are mortal, but long-lived - the oldest dwarves can live to nearly 250.     The Khazak: Masters of Stone and Mithril:   The Khazak dwarves of the Irontooth and Norgannoth ranges embody the classical ideals of dwarven civilization. Finding recluse in isolated under-kingdoms, theirs is a secretive society, founded on exceptional stonewrought architecture and impressive technological achievements in metallurgy, machinery, and blackpowder weaponry.   The Khazak, putting aside their isolationism, deigned to grant many useful inventions to humanity, and are thus responsible for the rise of the Empire. Unfortunately, much of their civilization was destroyed around the turn of the 7th century, as their people were mind-controlled by ancient illithid invaders.   The Mahakim: Masters of Animancy   The southern Mahakim dwarves are a common sight in Paxtria and Gedon. Making their homes on the surface, but in hills and caves near the ocean, the Mahakim live in numerous tribes and small settlements in the hotter climes of the world. Mahakim culture centers around the creation of golem servants using the spirits of their ancestors; golems outnumber dwarves by a factor of 10:1 in some Mahakim settlements. Outside of their isolated hill-settlements, Mahakim are known for their vibrant, colourful garments, bronze armour, and anthromorphic face-plate helmets, which are designed to strike terror into the hearts of their enemies. Mahakim often find themselves in the service of corsairs and mercenary companies around the Sea of Blades, especially in heavy infantry roles.
