Dragons

No being in Erden can match a dragon in size, power, or intellect. Immortal and blessed with gifts both mental and physical, the race of dragons has only been limited by their rarity and solitary nature. And dragons are rare indeed: less than 10 living dragons are known to exist across all of Erden, with perhaps a dozen more in distant Gedon and Paxtria.    Born of the machinations of ancient Fey, the solitary race of dragons have spent most of known history in the shadows, content to watch the events of lesser peoples with amusement. Yet when roused to anger or passion, a single dragon can devastate whole nations, their awe-inspiring nature destined to attract whole armies of cultists, mercenaries, and other followers.    The offspring of dragons and mortal races are known as dragonborn, and are a unique race of their own. In the arid and remote land of Gedon, dragonborn form an elite warrior caste, numbering at least in the tens of thousands - the vast majority offspring of other dragonborn.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Dragons grow slowly over the course of their lives - but never stop. As a result, dragons range in size from the size of a large cart to a castle.   They are notoriously inactive creatures, and spend at least 20 hours of the day asleep; even those few hours left are often spent immobile. Dragons can spend decades or centuries in a form of hibernation, shutting off most of their vital functions to pass the years in rest for reasons that are obscure to mortals.   Nonetheless, when roused - and even a slumbering dragon may rouse within seconds - they can respond to threats rapidly, as if they had been awake all along.

Civilization and Culture

History

Ten thousand years ago, the world was sundered in a cataclysmic war, as an alliance of rebels and Fey fought the loyalists of Sanguine to overthrew Her tyrannical rule.   Wisest among the Fey were the Atheracai, or Changers - fairy wizards capable of polymorphing themselves into nearly any shape. Yet against the might of Sanguines warlocks, wolves and bears were simply not enough. One winter, a band of pyromancers laid waste to the heart of the forest city of the Atheracai. In desperation, their leader, Coriolanus, channeled enormous amounts of magic into himself, transforming into a being that combined all the most ferocious aspects of nature. The resulting blast killed his wife and all his acolytes, but in their place, a being of unimaginable power was born. A blue-scaled winged serpent as large as a building, billowing hellfire itself: Coriolanus, the first dragon.   As the decades and centuries of the Godfall dragged on, more and more Atheracai transformed themselves into dragons. They would become a rare but influential race, their history marked by centuries of obscurity interspersed with brief moments of fiery glory.
Natural Shapeshifters   As descendants of the Primordial Fey, dragons retain a limited ability to shapeshift between a humanoid and draconic form.
