Personal history
Captain Holger was born to the innkeep Gisele Hawthorn in early 660s when she was a mature woman of 13. His family was well off, for Carsgarde, but his childhood was rather unhappy due to the abuse of his controlling father, Richter. Richter eventually ran off with another woman, leaving Gisele to run the Greytower inn by herself and look after her 4 children. Holger was fairly happy, and helped his mother. He even had a wife and a young child, though he was never a particularly caring father; the marriage was arranged for economic reasons.
This all changed when his wife, Karla, and daughter, Yen, went on a trip visiting her parents in the lakeside town of Eichen. They disappeared along the way. Locals claimed that elves had taken them and sacrificed them to fell gods. Considering the racist strife in the 680s, this did not seem out of the realm of possibilities to Holger.
Now a depressed widower at the young age of 18, Holger signed up to join the Imperial military in the great city of Carovin. With single-minded dedication and natural talent, he rose to the rank of Guard captain in only 4 years and took a post in Fort Kollitz just outside the Middengate. He became distrusted by the Valmer due to his bias against elvenfolk, a common attitude of the period.
In 686, Holger came across a group of ragged adventurers, who delivered him a gift from his mother. They later aided him in solving a crime, allowing him to return the Valmer fishing boats in the town of Sasau. A few weeks later, an undead horde descended on Carovin, and Holger barely escaped with his life.
This was not the end for the young captains career, however. He ran into the Champions of Carsgarde once again, and joined them (along with a sizeable contingent of refugees). He then formed a strong relationship with Gerhardt of Aufheim, a former guard captain like himself, and followed the northerner into the Crusade to retake Carovin.
