Battle of Frostfang Pass

Frostfang
Or,
An account of the Founding of the Empire
Authored by Brother Marcian, Blessed of Tyr
In the 352nd year after the Battle of Frostfang Pass
When you open this tome, you smell dust and ancient parchment. Marcian begins his account as follows:   "It is my intention to record the oral traditions of the Holmgardian tribes as they pertain to the events around the founding of the Empire, and include the later written accounts of historians who witnessed the founding, with a particular focus on the Greenskin invasion in what is now the first year of Holmgardian Reckoning."   After a lengthy and excessively detailed recounting of the confusing array of tribes, families, clans, and long-dead figures of the Men of the North, Marcian begins discussing the lead-up to the battle:   "Refugees from the Northern wastes arrived in droves and dark omens were foretold by the Skalds. From their mountain halls, the Dwarves of Arknthand, greatest of all cities, met with the high king of the North, Holm Graelingard I"   "A greenskin horde led by Grimgor was descending from the North on the civilized world, and the Dwarves forged a mighty alliance with the Men of the North to meet them."   After another overly detailed recounting of the meetings and feasts cementing the alliance, he begins discussing the battle:   "The forces of the civilized world marched North to Frostfang pass, where the Greenskin horde was reported to be mustering. 30,000 dwarves of Arknthand, 35,000 men of the North, and Men of Iron from Sinchundell (sic) were arrayed against 1,500,000 greenskins."   In a neat hand, Nexander has circled the figure of 1,500,000 in red and written “unlikely” in the margins. She has also circled the phrase “Men of Iron” and written: “constructs?!”. The rest of the passage describes the battle, but contains little useful information. Rather, it mostly discusses elaborate speeches and unlikely duels between important figures on both sides. The battle ends with Grimgor being struck down by Holm I himself, who supposedly rode into battle on an enormous dire wolf called Morthaur.   In the years following the battle, the Dwarf King rewarded Holm’s people for their service by constructing them a magnificent city on the flat plateau of Drakenhelm. Thus the first capital of the Empire was built, and all the Men of the North were united under Holm. Holm’s son, Ulric, conquered the Middenheim half-elves and built the new city of Holmgard on the ruins of their capital. Thus began the everlasting Empire of all Mankind.   Nexander has underlined the last sentence and written “Fools” in the margins.
