Barovia Village
The village of Barovia, not to be confused with the realm of Barovia, is the easternmost settlement in Strahd's evil realm. When Strahd first entered the valley of Delmor, he renamed the first town he conquered after his father, King Barov. As his conquests grew, the whole realm came to be called Barovia, leaving the village with a somewhat confusing name. Ill-fated travellers entering his domain were bound to pass through here first, a small and decrepit place once filled with half-abandoned manses, shrieking lunatics, and cannibal witches.
Beating back this madness is the newly crowned burgomaster, Istmark Kolyanovich. A charismatic leader and skilled warrior, he was the man responsible for sending his sister, Irina, to Vallaki, thus indirectly orchestrating the downfall of Strahd von Zarovich. In the aftermath of Strahd's fall, Barovia village was renamed New Anscath, in remembrance of the ancient, fallen city from where Irina Kolyana once hailed.
In the following years, the population of New Anscath exploded tenfold, as thousands of adventurers, holy folk, and vampire hunters flooded into Barovia. It became a rough, chaotic place, a microcosm of the freedom of the new Barovia both for good and ill.
