Baric Kamplefritz Aurelion Elreth von Thyssen "of the Long Mind"
"Look here, isn't this fascinating? The Luminai elves craft these funny glass discs to put over the eyes, like so. They let me see the smallest of details!"
- Baric of the Long Mind to Prince Karl Graelingard, shortly before Karl fell asleep from boredom.
Baric (Kamplefritz Aurelion Elreth von Thyssen) of the Long Mind is a gentleman, an adventurer, and a scholar. Though he is more than capable of holding his own in combat with the near-magical skills of Gedankenjager, his true passion is investigating and writing about historical events. It was this interest that first led him to the Order of the Heavenly Mind, a mysterious group of monks at the very edge of the Empire. The Order was a strange one; rather than dedicate themselves to a god such as Tyr or Kelemvor, they dedicated themselves to the pursuit of knowledge.
Unfortunately, Baric did not progress very far in the Order, for the requirements were, in his words, "far too stringent". He did become a scholar and a skilled fighter during his time there, and later spent years attempting to document the history of the early Empire.
It was while preparing a treatise on the early chieftains and high kings of the Holmgardian people that Baric had a fateful encounter with a curious quarter-orc in Drakenhelm. In his time in Drakenhelm, Baric had become a fairly popular figure. Though his pointy ears, strange manners and penchant for talking to excess grated on many, his interest in the Holmgardian chieftains was shared by much of the populace. So on a frigid night in the Blauenbock inn, Garon von Rallus took an interest in this strange fellows tales of ancient wars, far off lands, and mighty warriors. Baric generously took the young quarter-orc as his apprentice, and paid him a salary (out of a grant given by the Lord Protector of Drakenhelm himself).
One day, when the unlikely duo were deep in their cups, Baric explained the source of his training and knowledge, and Garon became set on learning the secrets of the Heavenly Minds. So Baric was left alone once again, and finished writing his treatise. He later ventured to the mysterious realm of the Luminai and became interested in elflore. It was this interest that led Baric to the Graahtwood, where he was soon reunited with his former student and his new travelling companions...
